A week of notes

Here are this week's food notes, in case you missed them....

When the World Series ends, the annual Heinen’s WVIZ World Series of Wine is about to begin.

This year’s wine extravaganza will be Nov. 4 and 5 in Cleveland, with two days full of tastings and seminars.

Three grand tastings at the Terrace Club at Progressive Field will be at held at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 4 and 1 and 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5 and will feature more than 400 wines from 150 wineries. Tickets are $75.

Small-group wine seminars that concentrate on specific wineries will begin at 2 and 4:30 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Hilton Garden Inn in downtown Cleveland, and an Italian food and wine seminar will start at 1 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Viking Store at Legacy Village, 24703 Cedar Road, Lyndhurst.

The seminars vary in cost at $50, $60 or $100.

Stew Pot has new home

The Stew Pot Kitchen has moved to a larger location at 23 S. Main St., in the Nantucket building in downtown Akron. Its previous home was 30 N. High St.

Owner Scott Malensek said that along with the new location come extended hours from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. weekdays. He’s also added soup kettles (there are 10 now) and he expects to add a salad bar and paninis soon.

Kirbie’s welcomes holidays

Every Saturday in November, Kirbie’s Family Meats & Catering, 4062 Fishcreek Road, Stow, will host its pre-holiday celebrations from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

On those Saturdays, Kirbie’s will offer new product sampling, recipe ideas, holiday catering and prepared food menu, gift box and basket ideas, butcher shop samplings and a lot more.

Free eats for Veterans Day

In honor of Veterans Day, Sarah’s Vineyard, 1204 W. Steels Corners Road, Cuyahoga Falls, is saying thank you to military personnel, past and present, by offering them complimentary cheese and cracker samplers on Nov. 11.

The offer is for all veterans, active duty, reservists and National Guard personnel. Wear a uniform or show a military ID to claim your treat.

Also on Veterans Day, Applebee’s restaurants will thank veterans and troops with a free entree.

The restaurant chain hopes to offer more than 1 million free meals to the nation’s military that day. Guests will need to provide proof of service. For information, call your local Applebee’s or visit www.?applebees.com.

Kent food co-op turns 40

The Kent Natural Food Cooperative, 151 E. Main St., Kent, will hold an open house from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Nov. 5 to celebrate its 40th anniversary.

The store will offer discounts to the public and to members. There will be a potluck, recipe sharing, music and an art exhibit.

Wine dinner at Kozmo’s

Kozmo’s Grille, 37 First St. SW, Massillon, will host a wine dinner on Tuesday.

The meal will include an entree of pork medallions with sour cherry sauce, roasted pear salad, Spanish shellfish stew, and maple bourbon sweet potato pie for dessert.

Each course includes wine pairings. Cost is $50, which includes tax and tip. Call 330-832-8807 for a reservation.
