I'm am always going on and on and on about Akron Beacon Journal food section readers and how great they are, how much fun I have talking to them, and how nice they are.
Just to prove my point, I want to share something that reader Janet Harris of Stow sent to me. She was reading our special section of cookie recipes and noticed that we printed the Akron classic recipe for Kaase's Cinnamon Star cookies.
She mentioned that she had something from Kaase's that she wanted to give to me and dropped this off on my doorstep. A vintage menu from Kaase's from Friday, Feb. 22, 1952. I love this bit of nostalgia and I have been having a lot of fun musing over the menu prices:
Broiled filet mignon with mushrooms, with choice of cup of soup, chilled tomato juice, or frosted fruit juice with sherbet float , and potato, vegetable, salad, rolls, beverage and dessert, cost a whopping $3.25! Pie was 20 cents and a cup of coffee was 10 cents.
You just don't get frosted fruit juice with a sherbet float anywhere these days. Other things you don't see on menus today: crisp celery and olives as an appetizer; fried whole pickerel, fried chicken with corn fritters and maple syrup.
Thank you Janet! This made my day!
