Devaney praises Shurmur
St. Louis Rams general manager Billy Devaney said it was new Browns coach Pat Shurmur's handling of players that earned him his first chance at a top NFL job.
''You hear stuff about players and coaches getting it. More than anything, Pat gets it,'' Devaney said Friday at the NFL Scouting Combine. "He's got a great way with players, relating to them, understanding, knowing when to push, when to back off. He's got a real good offensive mind, but besides that, just the way he relates with players is fantastic.''
Devaney said the best example came last season with quarterback Sam Bradford, the No. 1 pick in the draft in 2010. Shurmur was in his second season as Rams offensive coordinator.
"Dick Curl and Pat were the two guys who were around Sam all last year,'' Devaney said of Shurmur and Curl, who recently retired as quarterbacks coach. "The way those guys hit it off and the way they worked well together the whole season was really impressive.''
