John Smoltz tries pro golf
Former major league pitcher John Smoltz will compete for the first time as a professional golfer in next week's Nationwide Tour event, the South Georgia Classic in Valdosta.
The eight-time All-Star, 44, will try to become the first former pro athlete to make the cut in a Nationwide Tour tournament.
According to the tour, the others who have tried and failed are Al Del Greco, Grant Fuhr, Brett Hull, Ivan Lendl, Dan Quinn, Jerry Rice, Mark Rypien, Ralph Terry and Billy Joe Tolliver. The closest was Quinn, who missed the cut by six strokes at the 1990 Quicksilver Open in Pennsylvania.
