Browns coach Eric Mangini worked with Josh McDaniels as assistants with the New England Patriots from 2001-05. When McDaniels joined the Patriots in 2001, he helped Mangini coach the defensive backs.
Mangini said he felt for McDaniels, who was fired as Denver Broncos coach on Monday.
"It's never great to see that,'' Mangini said. "He's a guy I've known for a long time. I know how hard Josh works, how smart he is. You get to know a lot of head coaches in this league, Josh I just happen to know better.''
Mangini, fired from his first job with the New York Jets after the 2008 season, said he will soon get in contact with Barberton-born McDaniels, who g played quarterback and kicker at Canton McKinley.
''Going through the experience, you give the dust time to settle, then I'll definitely give him a call,'' Mangini said.
Except for issuing a public statement, McDaniels has said nothing since his regular Monday press conference.
The statement said, ''I am very grateful to Pat Bowlen and the Broncos’ organization for giving me the opportunity to be the head coach of such a proud franchise. I would like to thank all of the people who helped us over the last two years. I am especially appreciative of the efforts of every player, coach and member of the personnel department who worked so hard every day. I wish Pat Bowlen and the Broncos’ organization nothing but the best in the future.''
