Browns' lack of attention to receiving corps baffling

By Marla Ridenour Published: April 28, 2012

I can’t understand it.

The Browns had 13 picks when they started the NFL Draft and finished with 11, and only one of them was used on a wide receiver. And they waited until the 100th overall selection to take the University of Miami’s Travis Benjamin, who said he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.26 seconds the summer before his junior year.

2012 NFL Draft: Browns select Cincinnati NT John Hughes 87th

By Marla Ridenour Published: April 27, 2012

University of Cincinnati nose tackle John Hughes was the Browns’ third-round pick Friday night.
Hughes, 6-foot-2 1/2 and 309 pounds, also lettered in basketball and track and field (shot put) in high school at Gahanna Lincoln. For the Bearcats, he didn’t become a starter until 2010.
The Browns picked Hughes after trading down from 67th, acquiring a fourth-rounder (120th overall) from the Denver Broncos to slip 20 spots.
Browns general manager Tom Heckert called Hughes "a big, physical tough guy."

NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock described Hughes “a rotational defensive tackle.”

Dreaming of Blackmon-Weeden tandem and other draft day thoughts

By Marla Ridenour Published: April 26, 2012

I know Alabama running back Trent Richardson is the consensus pick, the safest pick.

I can still hear LaDainian Tomlinson’s mother telling me before the 2001 draft that she hoped the Browns selected the charity-minded TCU running back because of what he could do for the Cleveland community.

Curtis not yet qualified for Bridgestone Invitational

By Marla Ridenour Published: April 24, 2012

Ben Curtis' victory Sunday in the Valero Texas Open vaulted him to 28th in the FedExCup standings, brought him a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour and earned him $1.16 million, but it did not qualify him for the $8.5 million World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational.

That was the word from Don Padgett III, executive director of the Bridgestone Invitational, on Monday. While tournament winners often qualify, the Valero Texas Open's strength of field was not enough to get Curtis in the prestigious event Aug. 2-5 at Firestone Country Club.

More from my recent interview with Chris Spielman on his new book, "That's Why I'm Here: The Chris and Stefanie Spielman Story," which chronicles his wife Stefanie's 11-year battle with breast cancer. Stephanie died in November, 2009.

Q: The notes you included that you received, did those show you the impact Stefanie had on people you didn’t know?
A: “For us they were comforting. It’s always nice to get conformation.”

Those missed free throws need practice

By Marla Ridenour Published: April 3, 2012

Aaron Craft’s lane violation on an intentional missed free throw attempt in the final seconds of Ohio State’s loss to Kansas Saturday brought deja-vu for University of Akron coach Keith Dambrot.

The Zips experienced the same scenario in the championship game loss to Ohio University in the Mid-American Conference Tournament, then again in their next game, a defeat at Northwestern in the National Invitation Tournament.
