Masters champions are allowed possession of their green jackets for a year, then they must be kept in their lockers at Augusta National Golf Club.
This year's winner, Charl Schwartzel, is not wasting that opportunity. The South African is carrying it in his suitcase as he travels around the world.
"I take it pretty much with me everywhere,'' Schwartzel said Wednesday as he prepared for this week's Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club. "If you get to keep it only for a year and then leave it, you've got to pretty much enjoy it.''
Most of the time, Schwartzel said he hangs the jacket in his hotel closet and looks at it in awe. But he did wear it on request last week at the European Tour's awards dinner.
"It was a black-tie event, and I'm dressed up in a green jacket,'' Schwartzel said. "Most people thought I was a waiter.''
