Antibacterial products for flu prevention? Nope

By Mary Beth Breckenridge Published: January 24, 2013

A news release that just landed in my email in-box pitches an antibacterial cleaner as a means for preventing flu.

Think again, Big Cleaning Products Manufacturer.

Bacteria don't cause influenza. Viruses do. Antibacterial products kill bacteria, not viruses.

You want to keep the flu at bay? Try cleaning with a solution of chlorine bleach and water or a product that contains chlorine bleach, microbiologist and germ researcher Chuck Gerba of the University of Arizona advises. Bleach kills both viruses and bacteria.
