Bring a bit of the beach to home decor

By Mary Beth Breckenridge Published: August 7, 2013

I love the beach, but a nautical decorating theme doesn't usually play out well in land-locked Ohio.

Libby Langdon, however, caught my attention with her ideas for bringing a bit of the beach indoors. The interior designer, author and TV personality uses elements such as shells and starfish in a sophisticated way that adds a bit of seaside romance to the home.

Her ideas:

  • Use imiitation coral made from resin to get a beachy look without depleting the real thing. Combine the faux coral with small shells and candles to create a centerpiece on a table set with white plates and linens.
  • Lean a mirror in front of your fireplace opening during the warm months, and arrange candles, shells and faux coral on the hearth.
  • Fill large, clear-glass vases or vessels with assorted shells, either collected from the beach or purchased at a craft store.
  • Fill silver lanterns with small rope spheres for a nautical touch that's not too obvious.
  • Prop starfish in a window for a simple decoration that looks good inside and out.
