Cold injury causes brown spots in lawns

By Mary Beth Breckenridge Published: May 1, 2014

If your lawn is dotted with brown spots, it's probably cold injury.

The frigid snap in mid-April injured some tender grass blades, particularly in newly mowed lawns. That left patches of brown grass in lawns across Ohio.

The good news is that in most cases, the grass will come back just fine, says Joe Rimelspach, a turf grass pathologist at Ohio State University. As long as the crowns of the grass plants are healthy, the grass will rebound.

Rimelspach created this video to help you determine the health of your grass crowns. He also includes tips on helping your lawn bounce back from winter.
