Creative ways to honor a loved one's memory

By Mary Beth Breckenridge Published: April 10, 2013

It's possible to find a place in your home to honor the memory of a loved one without creating a maudlin shrine.

Charmean Neithart, an interior designer from Pasadena, Calif., offers suggestions on the home-design website Houzz for creating decorative elements that remember someone for the way he or she lived.

One I especially like is taking and displaying a picture of a favorite view. One of her clients created a wall mural from a photo that was shot from her parents' living room.

Another favorite: asking children to draw pictures of their favorite moments with their loved one, and then framing and displaying the pictures in a collage.

Other suggestions include finding a spot for the person's favorite books, planting a flowering tree or artfully displaying a small portion of a collection or mementos from a favorite hobby.
