Alter’d Relics: Design Studio in Barberton is run by mother-daughter team Pam Andrella and Arica Neill. The two design enthusiasts revive old furniture and sell it at the shop, along with jewelry, home accessories and other items created to local artisans.

Cold won't kill off emerald ash borer

Don’t count on this cold snap to do away with the dreaded emerald ash borer.

Like many people, I was buoyed by news of a research study that showed extreme cold would kill the ash borer larvae, which are destroying ash trees in our region. Researchers Robert C. Venette of the U.S. Forest Service and Mark Abrahamson of the Minnesota Department of Agriculture found that ash borer larvae died when the temperature reached what’s called their supercooling point, which on average was 13 below Fahrenheit.

Thinking of starting seeds this year to plant in your garden? There's no need to plunk down big bucks on a grow light.

Vegetable gardener Greg Holdsworth offers instructions for building a grow light stand out of PVC pipe in the e-newsletter published by Fine Gardening's Vegetable Gardener website. It's a fairly easy project, and best of all, it cost Holdsworth less than $60 -- including the light fixture.

Apparently immersing ourselves in the opulent world of Downton Abbey via the TV screen isn’t enough for some of us.

A whole slew of Downton Abbey products is reaching the market. The latest to reach my desk is the Anna’s Promise rose (named for the long-suffering servant Anna Bates) from mail-order retailer Breck’s and a series of Downton Christmas ornaments coming out from Kurt S. Adler.
