Garden cleanup prevents problems next year

By Mary Beth Breckenridge Published: October 10, 2012

It's time to clean up the garden, the folks at Buckeye Yard and Garden Line remind us.

The most recent issue of the newsletter from Ohio State University advises gardeners to clean out remaining weeds, particularly winter annuals such as chickweed and annual bluegrass. Remove and compost old vegetable plants, and be sure to get rid of any diseased plant parts from ornamental or food plants.

Many organisms overwinter on old plant material, so if you leave those plant remnants in the garden, you could be setting yourself up for trouble next year.
