Budget kitchen makeovers

I'm rarely wowed by photos of kitchen makeovers done by professionals. The results can be gorgeous, sure. But if you throw enough money at a project, you ought to expect great results.

I much prefer to see makeovers done by average folks with more creativity than cash.

Minimize caulk mess

Fine Homebuilding's Chuck Miller passes along a simple tip for minimizing the mess when you're smoothing caulk with your finger: Keep a cheap tablet of paper handy so you can wipe your finger on the top sheet. When the paper is full, tear it off and use the next sheet.

Granted, it's not the greenest option.But if you've ever tried to do the job with a rag, you know how quickly it can get gummed up.

A peek at Target's Nate Berkus Collection

Target has released details about its upcoming Nate Berkus Collection.

I have to admit I was a little disappointed by the initial offerings, which have a more masculine feel and more muted colors than I'm drawn to. But I did like a few pieces, notably the sculpted branch lamp base and the gray, stone-look bathroom accessories.

My husband and I have been keeping an eye on the bare spots in our lawn, hoping the grass will miraculously reappear.
