Horticultural grants still available

Planning a horticulture-related project, program or event? There's still time to apply for funding through the Summit County Master Gardeners.

The organization is offering grants of up to $1,000 to nonprofit, educational or public organizations in Summit County. The project must have an educational element to qualify, and the grant must be used within 12 months.

Jubilee wax is back

Every now and then I get a call or an email from a reader distressed by the disappearance of Jubilee Kitchen Wax. So I'm happy to pass along the news that it's back.

Pam Kueber of the midcentury design blog Retro Renovation reports that Malco Products Inc. has licensed the product from SC Johnson. Malco is selling Jubilee on its website, but only in cases of 12, at least for now.

Zillow Digs is a collection of pictures of remodeling projects you can browse for inspiration, sort of like Pinterest. Some include cost estimates for materials and labor, which you can tailor to the market in your area by entering your ZIP code.

Kick return pays off big for store's customers

Some lucky furniture buyers in Baltimore scored right along with their team Sunday.

Gardiners Furniture in Maryland had promised that if the Baltimore Ravens returned a kick for a touchdown at the start of either half of the Super Bowl, all furniture purchased from Jan. 31 until 3 p.m. on game day would be free, the Baltimore Sun reported. Jacoby Jones complied with a 108-yard kick return, giving customers an extra reason to celebrate.

Christmas lights keep plants warm

I'm usually kind of snooty about people keeping their outdoor Christmas lights burning weeks after the holidays, but I'll make an exception in Greg Holdsworth's case.

Holdsworth, a contributor to Fine Gardening 's site, wrote an article recently that recommends using incandescent Christmas lights to warm a cold frame. The lights warmed his setup 20 to 30 degrees, creating an outdoor environment warm enough to protect cold-sensitive plants from damage.
