On Beating A Dead Horse

By The Reverend Published: June 28, 2016

I've been watching a replay of Trump's prompter-assisted speech today in Pennsylvania. You Tube has it here. I must again make mention of just how awkward Trump is with a teleprompter. He's just terrible. He can't get into any comfortable rhythm, and it all comes across as very amateurish...and...well...kind of boring.

He's telling his audience he is all about helping U.S. workers but he's railing against corporate regulations and tax rates, just like any run-of-the-mill GOP candidate. The speech is, as usual, full of falsehoods...and his trade solutions would obviously bring about a trade war which will depress the U.S. economy. So, not only is Trump's speech delivery worse than ever...but he's also entirely wrong in his suggested solutions.

But what's been sticking in my craw since early yesterday is how the for-profit media has been dealing with polling numbers. Two new polls were released on Sunday, one by NBC/WSJ and one by ABC/WAPO. The ABC poll had Hillary up by TWELVE percent. The NBC poll had Hillary only up by 5%. MSNBC and Fox both featured the NBC polling numbers and they ran them in segments most of the day. I wonder why that was the case.

But then today, as NBC's Survey Monkey released a new poll showing Hillary up by 8%, and as Real Clear Politics moved it's average head-to-head Clinton lead over Trump to 6.8%.....MSNBC's Morning Blow team quickly dispensed with the new Survey Monkey poll. Then Scarborough immediately criticized the Sunday ABC poll as inaccurate...and then both anchors moved immediately back to the Sunday NBC/WSJ polling to show how on specific issues Trump leads Hillary...on things like who would best "change Washington", whatever that means. They spent the remainder of a 7+ minute segment opining about those intangible numbers.

This Is How Democrats Unite Against Trump

By The Reverend Published: June 28, 2016

I watched the Elizabeth Warren-Hillary Clinton event from Cincinnati, Ohio yesterday. MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell...not a favorite of mine...said of the female duo's performances.... "it did seem like magic on that stage."

Mitchell's take was a bit much...but I did observe a rather significant change in Hillary's stump message. Elizabeth Warren...Trump Slayer....was her usual lively self. The Massachusetts Senator seems to relish going after the guy she refers to as "a thin-skinned money grubber"....and yesterday's female-duo event will no doubt be repeated elsewhere in pivotal swing states as the campaign continues.

Even though what Villagers were most interested in yesterday was whether Warren would be Hillary's VP choice, that prospect is very unlikely. Why? Massachusetts has a Republican governor, Charlie Baker. Should Clinton pick Warren, Baker would replace her in the U.S. Senate with a Republican. To take control of the U.S. Senate next January, Democrats will need every Democrat they can find....so a Warren VP is highly unlikely. The same rule applies to the very honorable Sherrod Brown. GOP Governor Kasich would replace Brown with a Republican until the next scheduled election and as with Warren, Democrats can't spare even one U.S. Senate seat.

Julian Castro and Tim Kaine, in my opinion, are still the leading prospects for Clinton's VP job.....but one never knows about these things...and regardless, running mate selections really don't play a major role in the choices voters make when picking their next president.

Playing Along With Conservative Pretenders

By The Reverend Published: June 27, 2016

Over the past few years, as conservatives absorbed their diminishing prospects to compete in national elections, their response was to have red states conspire together to pass voter ID laws that were, coincidentally, virtually identical. In spite of the fact that in-person voter fraud is as likely in America as earthlings being visited by Martians, Republican-controlled states swore that what they were up to in these voter ID laws was...sincere...

They have a valid and legitimate state interest not only in deterring and detecting voter fraud, but also in maintaining the confidence of their citizens in the security of U.S. elections.

"deterring" voter fraud, which is non-existent...and "maintaining" citizen "confidence" in elections which have never been affected, ever, by in-person voter fraud.

Under the pretense of stopping non-existent in person voter fraud, a conspiracy was launched which, in reality, was meant to trim ever-so-much the number of likely-Democratic votes cast in any given election.

What "Winning" Looks Like

By The Reverend Published: June 27, 2016

Conservative conventional wisdom is that the UK will now be better off not being a member of the European Union. The habitually-wrong Larry Kudlow explains....

"It gives Britain an opportunity to improve its economic policies on the supply side with less regulation and lower taxes and spending," he said.

Kudlow doesn't say which Voodoo Mama he consulted before uttering that chant.

On Friday, the Brexit vote was met by the markets with...well....panic. The worth of the pound sank to a 30 year low, which means that it will take more shillings to buy the same stuff UK citizens were buying just last week. Apparently, with this morning's news, it will take even more shillings to buy the same stuff UK citizens were buying just over this past weekend....

Conflicting Narratives About Mateen

By The Reverend Published: June 26, 2016

This past week, CBS put up a piece questioning Omar Mateen's sexual orientation. The piece includes some of the accounts I've posted here on the blog. Coincidentally, and on the same day, the FBI made this claim....

..the FBI has found no evidence so far to support claims by those who say Mateen had gay lovers or communicated on gay dating apps, several law enforcement officials said.

A former high school classmate, an ex-wife, and numerous Pulse nightclub regulars plus a guy calling himself "Miguel" who claims he had 15 or 20 rendevous hookups with Mateen just six months ago...all seem to contradict what the FBI is claiming.

And now we have this from TMZ.....yeah, I know, it's TMZ...but still. And remember, TMZ had the story of Prince's percocet addiction before ANYONE....

Is "Stexit" Next?

By The Reverend Published: June 25, 2016

Question: If it is true that Brexit was a decision that was good for the United Kingdom, why did the worth of the British pound fall to it's lowest levels in 30 years yesterday?

It would seem to me that if, indeed, leaving the EU was, as U.S. conservatives are claiming today, the UK "taking back it's country"....then why did the markets comprehend the UK vote to leave the EU as a rather significant NEGATIVE?

Observation: UK citizens under 50 years old voted to remain in the EU. Those over 50 years old voted to leave. What explains that divide?

I've been trying to figure out where the incentives are for citizens of the UK to leave the European Union. According to this article, leaving the EU will not change a thing when it comes to accepting refugees OR preventing citizens of non-EU nations from entering the UK.

The WonkBoy Plan To Help The Poor

By The Reverend Published: June 24, 2016

Paul Ryan really cares about poorer Americans. Just ask him. Ryan has visited poor areas of the U.S.....and THAT'S how we know how much he cares about them. He cares so deeply about the plight of the poor that the "tax reform blueprint" he will unveil today in the House would make America's billionaires exponentially richer. Wait, WTF?

The proposal calls for lowering rates, moving the United States toward a consumption-based tax system and revamping the IRS. GOP lawmakers designed it to foster economic growth, make the tax code simpler and eliminate the reasons why companies would participate in offshore tax deals known as “inversions.”

The end zone for the supply-siders is that "consumption-based tax system". Taxing only what is bought is every billionaires wettest of dreams. And because Paul Ryan cares ever so deeply about the poor in America, his plan would help make those billionaire dreams become reality. Seems oddly disconnected, doesn't it?

The "blueprint" being rolled out today in the House would lower the highest income tax rate from 39.6% to 33%.....a 6.6% reduction. And because the poor, you know, are so burdened with high capital gains taxes on all their many investments...

Brexit-ed

By The Reverend Published: June 24, 2016

Dow futures are down over 500 points as I type this. In a surprise, British voters decided yesterday to leave the European Union. The vote was 52-48% to leave.

A Brexit represents nothing less than the partial splintering of the world’s largest political union and trading bloc — an $18 trillion economy. Many fear that other European countries will now hold their own exit referendums, leading to a chain reaction that will reverberate across the Atlantic. The Brexit vote could also break apart the UK, scramble transatlantic political unity amid growing tensions with Russia, and complicate U.S. trade ties.

British Prime Minister David Cameron .... announced he's resigning, citing a need for "fresh leadership."

The Brexit story will dominate the news cycle today. Look for media anchors to spend quite a bit of time listing how many ways the British exit from the EU will negatively affect Obama's presidency and Hillary's quest to become the next president. The Donald will receive high praise today from media for having the pulse of the British commoners. And anti-immigration forces in the U.S. will have a field day.

A Thug Who Admires Other Thugs

By The Reverend Published: June 23, 2016

Just a quick hitter.

The company he keeps is what is key here.

Hugh Hewitt interviewed the Donald today. Hewitt is his own unique version of freakishness, but set that aside for now. Hewitt tried to get Trump to make news on his program. Who might he choose for his VP, who might serve as high level cabinet members in a Trump presidency.....

Trump noted that Christie was an early backer of his campaign, while Cotton, who was a vocal critic of the Obama administration on the Iran deal, "is a very talented guy" and "a very popular person."

Only A Symptom Of A Much More Serious Disease

By The Reverend Published: June 23, 2016

Fox Freak, Howard Kurtz, was very excited over the speech his political party's presidential nominee awkwardly read off a teleprompter yesterday. Howie praised Trump's "disciplined approach" and suggested that the hot mess of lies masquerading as a campaign speech might just "convince skeptics in his own party".

Kurtz hosts the Machiavellian Fox program called MediaBuzz...perhaps it is called that because viewers must put a good buzz on before sitting down to watch it. Don't know for sure. Howie is a "news" media critic who personally has a conservative hate-radio perspective. He specializes in what I call sins of omission. Kurtz purposely withholds all damning evidence from his program which contradicts the far-right's take on almost every political issue.

As you might expect, Howie praised Trump's speech from yesterday, calling it....

...the first real slugfest of the general election, and the punches thrown—attention, media folks—were mainly about substance.
