What I Learned On My Summer Vacation

By The Reverend Published: August 31, 2016

The in-law consensus opinion of this year's choices for president is as follows: 'One candidate is a lying bitch and the other is an asshole'. So, corporate media's hard work to convince audiences that both-sides-do-it,..both-siderism...is paying grassroots dividends.

One in-law said he would probably skip the presidential boxes on election day and just vote for the down ticket candidates. A few in-laws support the Donald because, they said, Hillary would be worse. Those who plan to vote Trump really, really hate the HildaBeast. However, many younger in-laws oppose Trump....for many of the same reasons you've read about here on this blog.

What became clear to me these past six days is the effect of the "two news narratives" I've been writing about for quite awhile. Because of those dual narratives, thoughtful discussions became virtually impossible.

In one brief exchange that illustrates the nature of the dual narrative problem, I was told that low natural gas prices are not the reason that coal is not being used as much to generate electricity. Instead, I was informed that coal is actually cheaper than natural gas BECAUSE the price of coal has been artificially increased by federal regulations.

What Holds The Trump Movement Together?

By The Reverend Published: August 25, 2016

I see that Mr. Trump is in the process of reversing himself on the singular issue which rocketed him to the top of the....Clown pile...mass deportation of them-there illegals. From what I've read, Trump is now embracing the immigration policy of...oh noes.....the GOP establishment.

Deport the "bad ones", don't do anything to "hurt" the "good ones", but no path to citizenship, ever. Boilerplate GOP doctrine. Low-energy Jeb's and Little Marco's immigration policy. The alleged "outsider", "non-establishment" candidate...in just 24 hour...became the same-old "insider establishment" GOP candidate.

This reversal will not affect Trump's cult followers....because, other than vengeance, Trump's supporters are not ideological. And because Donald, himself, is not ideological, nothing he claims he will do if elected has any meaning or resonance. There are less than 80 days until we vote....and the GOP candidate for the presidency is still a blank chalkboard.

Except for one overarching unspoken policy....punishing liberals.

Guess which state these poll findings represent....

In a four-way matchup with Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson and Green Party nominee Jill Stein, Trump and Clinton each have 39 percent.

That's the latest poll results from the secession state of South Carolina....yep, South Carolina.

And then, there's Missouri....

Learning About The New Trump Way

By The Reverend Published: August 23, 2016

I've been learning new things this election cycle. Exciting new things. Things I had never imagined were possible before. For example: I used to think that, say, nuclear physics, was best left to, you know, educated, trained and experienced nuclear physicists. But what I have learned these past 14 months as I have closely observed the presidential contest.....is that my previous thinking was part of the 'old way'.

In the 'new way' of thinking ushered in by the Trump movement, anyone, with years of education and experience in a specific field of study, or with no education or experience at all in that specific field...are equally qualified and capable of making sound determinations about that field of study.

Which, when you give it some thought, is quite liberating. How liberating, you might ask? So liberating.....that now rightwing folks who appear on the teevee screen, folks who have absolutely no experience or training in the medical field, have become doctors. And not just doctors, mind you, but doctors with new miraculous powers to diagnose ailments without ever examining the patient. This should come as exciting news for, you know, young, uneducated and inexperienced would-be entrepreneurs who long to open up their own businesses....but don't want to get bogged down with all that boring college work, internships, and years of hard-knock, on the job experience...

(Trump surrogate) AMY KREMER: I am sorry, but [Hillary Clinton] has had an incident where she fell and had a major concussion, and then she had a blood clot in her head, a very serious blood clot. I mean, that's something to be concerned about.

Ronnie's Law & The Trump Movement

By The Reverend Published: August 21, 2016

According to Trump's fans, the one quality they seem to admire the most about the billionaire is the notion that he is an "outsider". And as an outsider occupying the Oval Office, a President Trump would shake up the "Capitol Hill club".

What I am in need of is someone to explain to me how in the hell an "outsider" president would go about shaking up a "Capitol Hill club" that's jam packed with "insiders". How would that work?

Now...I could make some sense of what seems senseless if EVERY member of the "insider" Congress was being replaced by "outsider" candidates. But that is simply not happening. Should Trump become president, he'll be facing a Congress full of, yes, political insiders. 100 insiders in the Senate and 435 insiders in the House.

With the separation of powers being what they are.....how, exactly, would an outsider President Trump shake up a Capitol Hill club made up of 535 political insiders?

WTF Overload

Why the Louisiana governor asked President Obama to wait "another couple weeks" before visiting the flood ravaged areas of his state....

“It is a major ordeal, they free up the interstate for him,” Gov. John Bel Edwards (D) told MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow on Thursday. “We have to take hundreds of local first responders, police officers, sheriffs, deputies and state troopers to provide security for that type of visit.”

“I would just as soon have those people engaged in the response rather than trying to secure the president,” Bel Edwards continued. “So I’d ask him to wait, if he would, another couple weeks.”

The Associated Press was well aware of the Louisiana governor's request of Obama to "wait...another couple weeks" before visiting. But, on Friday, the AP decided to post this, anyway...

T-Shots

By The Reverend Published: August 19, 2016

I used to play golf in my younger years. In a casual round of golf there is a thing called a mulligan....a do-over.....usually following a bad tee shot. When a mulligan is granted by other players, it is as if the bad tee shot never happened. The flubbed, shanked or sliced tee shot isn't counted on the score card, a new ball is teed up, and the phuck-up is quickly forgotten.

Many across the spectrum of corporate-sponsored "news" media have been more than willing....some enthusiastically so....to grant Mr. Trump a mulligan on his year+ campaign for the presidency. But see, according to him, Mr. Trump has never shanked or sliced or phucked-up anything during his campaign....so, no need to ask for a mulligan, no need to re-tee anything, anything at all.

Last night in North Carolina, Trump did not ask for a mulligan either. But he admitted that he may have, occasionally, chosen the wrong club or used the wrong ball or tee....

"Sometimes in the heat of debate and speaking on a multitude of issues, you don't choose the right words or say the right thing," Trump told the crowd at the Charlotte Convention Center. "I have done that. And believe it or not, I regret it. And I do regret it. Particularly where it may have caused personal pain. Too much is at stake for us to be consumed with these issues."

New Trump Media Network Plan Coming Together

By The Reverend Published: August 18, 2016

From Wikipedia....White nationalism is an ideology that advocates a racial definition of national identity. These individuals identify and are attached to the perceived white nation.

Yesterday we learned that Trump has hired the head of Breitbart "News", Steve Bannon, to be the chief executive of his campaign.....

Kellyanne Conway — already a senior adviser to the campaign — told NBC News she has been promoted to the role of campaign manager. She confirmed that Paul Manafort will stay on as campaign chair but said Stephen Bannon, the co-founder of conservative Breitbart News, will come on board as campaign CEO.

What this means is that the already gonzo Trump campaign will become even nastier and nuttier. I know that doesn't seem possible...but just wait and see.

Why Is Press Savaging Trump Now?

By The Reverend Published: August 17, 2016

I recommend reading Ezra Klein's latest at Vox. Klein seeks to answer the question: why does the press feel free to criticize the GOP nominee?

Klein touches on something I have mentioned previously on this blog.

Back when Republican elites took Trump less seriously, and were often trying to use him as a tool to attack other leading Republicans or push their own agendas that they believed would respond to the grievances of Trump voters, there was actually less behind-the-scenes criticism of his temperament and campaign, at least in my experience.

Then, top Republicans were, by turns, annoyed, bemused, and reflective when talking about Trump. Now they are disgusted, panicked, and desperate. That is manifesting in the coverage of reporters talking to those Republicans.
