Celebrate Labor...On Labor Day

By The Reverend Published: August 31, 2014

It was two years ago when one of the GOP House Leaders, Eric Cantor said this in commemoration of Labor Day....

“Today, we celebrate those who have taken a risk, worked hard, built a business and earned their own success,” the conservative congressman said in a statement. “I am committed to keeping taxes low and reducing red tape to make it easier for Virginia’s small business owners to start hiring again, create more jobs and ensure a thriving economy for the future so more people can achieve the American dream.”

Turning Labor Day on it's head, Cantor celebrated business owners instead. The reason I mention it today is because of the inverted....or perverted....nature of our modern discourse. Up means down in today's land of Orwell. Black is white....and Labor Day is Business Day.

Although everything Cantor said about business owners is wrong....low taxes on rich business owners do not spur economic growth and hiring, cutting business regulations only further enriches already rich business owners at the cost of consumer safety or our environment....and those rich business owners are not our nation's job creators, consumers with money in hand are.

Sold A Rancid Bill Of Goods

By The Reverend Published: August 28, 2014

Access to an uploadable device has been sketchy all week....and regular daily blogging will not resume until after Labor Day....but I have commandeered the house computer for a here's something that has been on my mind.

There's a theme prevalent on the warmongering right which I guess I don't fully appreciate. It goes like this: leaving Iraq in such a mess as it is in today does not properly honor those U.S. military members who have sacrificed their lives and/or broken bodies in that hellhole of a country. Here is a portion of a McClatchy article where former and current members of the military from London, Kentucky were interviewed on the subject.....

“I honestly feel we pulled out of Iraq too soon,” he (wounded serviceman Adam Campbell) said. “It was something done to gain political favor. All the loss we had, all the guys who made tremendous sacrifices. And for what?”

And they are older ones, such as Bill Jones, who helps lead a local chapter of Disabled American Veterans. Pulling out of Iraq “was the worst mistake we could have ever done,” he said.

Leadership Via Fear

By The Reverend Published: August 25, 2014

I've been away since last Wednesday....and without internet access since last Thursday. But I see today I haven't missed a damn thing. Same old stupid stuff.

I did notice this from the Washington Post....

The small city of Jennings, Mo., had a police department so troubled, and with so much tension between white officers and black residents, that the city council finally decided to disband it. Everyone in the Jennings police department was fired. New officers were brought in to create a credible department from scratch.

That was three years ago. One of the officers who worked in that department, and lost his job along with everyone else, was a young man named Darren Wilson.

Suicide By Cop

By The Reverend Published: August 21, 2014

Go to Huffington Post and click on "Shock Video, St Louis cops gun down man." Listen to what the cop has to say about police killing yet another young black male, this time two miles from where Michael Brown was murdered.....and then watch the killing caught on video.

The account given by St. Louis police chief Sam Dotson in a tweet stated that the two police officers "feared for their safety". But if you watch the video, you'll see the officers were never in any danger.

I'm beginning to think that what's happening in Missouri is the rollout of some newfangled "stand your ground" law exclusively applicable to police.

A police officer "feels" threatened.....doesn'ty matter why.....and he draws his weapon and kills. Freedom. Liberty.

White Americans: Ferguson Police Have Not "Gone Too Far"

By The Reverend Published: August 20, 2014

Post-racial, my ass....

A new Pew Research Center poll finds sharp divisions on the perception of Ferguson based on race. Overall, by a 44 percent to 40 percent margin, Americans say what’s happening there raises important issues about race. But among blacks, 80 percent say so. Among whites, just 37 percent say it does, while 47 percent believe race is getting more attention than it deserves. Nearly two-thirds of blacks think the police have gone too far; just a third of whites said so. Three-quarters of blacks do not have confidence in the shooting investigation, but a majority of whites — 52 percent — do.

After the many images of a military-style occupation of Ferguson, Missouri have passed before all of us on national network teevee.....only one third of whites polled think police there have "gone too far", while two-thirds of blacks polled think police there have gone too far.

Truly, I don't get it. What explains those numbers?

Gutless Congress Voted To Continue Militarizing Police

By The Reverend Published: August 19, 2014

The Posse Comitatus Act is the United States federal law....that was passed on June 18, 1878, after the end of Reconstruction and was updated in 1981. Its intent (in concert with the Insurrection Act of 1807) was to limit the powers of Federal government in using federal military personnel to enforce the state laws.

For 136 years, the federal government has been prohibited from using the United States military on the soil of the Homeland to enforce the law. The National Guards of the various states and the Coast Guard are not included in this prohibition.

How best to circumvent Posse Comitatus? Simply turn the Homeland's many local police forces into the military.

A couple of months ago, one of the few true progressives in Congress, Democratic Representative Alan Grayson of Florida introduced an amendment to stop the transfer of military equipment to local and state police.

Did Ferguson Police Chief Purposely Incite Rioting?

By The Reverend Published: August 18, 2014

CBS....Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon has called out the National Guard after another night of trouble in Ferguson, Missouri, and the first guard members were showing up on the city's streets at dawn on Monday.

I think the reason Nixon called in the Guard is because, primarily black, Ferguson protestors of Michael Brown's murder have been entirely alienated by what I consider to be a rogue Ferguson, primarily white, police force.

There is no doubt in my mind that Ferguson police purposely incited Ferguson protestor rioting by releasing the convenience store security camera video on Friday.

Governor Nixon agrees....

It's Not About Law And Order, It's About Race

By The Reverend Published: August 17, 2014

(Missouri Governor) Nixon said Saturday that the state will not allow a handful of looters to endanger the community and that there must be calm if justice is to be served. The curfew will run from midnight to 5 a.m.

Why was it necessary to invoke a curfew after tensions had eased somewhat?

Tensions in Ferguson flared late Friday after police released the name of the officer who fatally shot 18-year-old Michael Brown and documents alleging Brown robbed a store before he died.

The question I have is....why did Ferguson law enforcement officials release a security camera video of Michael Brown taking cigars and roughing up a convenience store attendant?

When "Separation" Doesn't Mean Separation

By The Reverend Published: August 16, 2014

Portion of a letter from the American Humanist Association to Gainseville, Georgia's Chestatee High School.....

We have been informed that the school’s football coaches have been using their
position to promote Christianity on the football team by integrating Bible verses into functional team documents and team promotions in various ways; meanwhile, they have been either leading the team in prayer or participating in team prayers on a regular basis. This type of religious activity, by government employees in the course of their duties as public school football coaches,is a clear violation of the Establishment Clause. This letter demands that CHS coaching staff cease leading, participating in, or encouraging team prayer, and that the school remove all Bible verses and other religious messages from team documents and related materials.

And here is U.S. Rep Doug Collins (R-GA) responding....

Collins, a chaplain in the U.S. Air Force Reserve and a former Baptist pastor, defended the school’s religious practices in a statement Wednesday, accusing the AHA of bullying students.

Authoritarian Mindset...."Yes Sir, Yes Ma'am"

By The Reverend Published: August 15, 2014

I see that Chuck Todd will be replacing Dancin' David Gregory as anchor of Meet the Press. That is similar to painting your off-white kitchen a softer shade of The ratings will remain in the basement. Todd is identical to Gregory when it comes to his embrace of "both sides do it-ism." Chuck Todd doesn't seem to be the arrogant prick that Gregory has always been....but Todd's focus on the "game" of politics, who's up, who's down, while usually avoiding any substantive discussion over actual policy will guarantee low ratings for MTP in the future. Good job guys.

Speaking of teevee guys who are arrogant seems that Morning Joe anchor, Joe Scarborough, a Republican hack playacting being a journalist, had some advice for Washington Post reporter, Wesley of two reporters arrested briefly by Ferguson, Missouri stormtroopers.

Scarborough is a deep well of.....conventional conservative wisdom. And as such, the repellant anchor thought he would offer advice to authentic reporters who were, you know, doing their job. Why, if Joe were in the same situation as authentic reporters in Ferguson, he wouldn't...."debate and film the police officer unless I want to get on TV and have people talk about me the next day."

Scarborough is wise. He knows that Wesley Lowery, a real journalist not a wooden Pinocchio without a heart, only wanted to "have people talk about" him the next day. That is why Lowery had himself arrested. Scarborough, unlike all other humans, has the ability to read minds and determine motives.....all without confronting the facts of the matter.

Was Militarizing Law Enforcement A Good Idea?

By The Reverend Published: August 14, 2014

"...if anyone thinks that the militarization of our police force isn't a huge issue in this country, I've got a story to tell you."

That's what Huffington Post reporter Ryan Reilly put up on his Facebook page after being arrested by Ferguson, Missouri police.

Ryan was working on his laptop in a McDonald's near the protests in Ferguson, MO, when police barged in, armed with high-powered weapons, and began clearing the restaurant. Ryan photographed the intrusion, and police demanded his ID in response. Ryan, as is his right, declined to provide it. He proceeded in packing up his belongings, but was subsequently arrested for not packing up fast enough. Both Ryan and Wesley were assaulted.

Wesley is Wesley Lowery, a reporter for the Washington Post, who was also arrested. Lowery ....

Conservatism's Lowest Lifeform: Rush Limbaugh

By The Reverend Published: August 13, 2014

A caller to Rush Limbaugh's show yesterday was upset that corporate media "folks" were spending too much time talking about the suicide of Robin Williams.

Caller: "I just feel like they're making a huge deal about this when there's so much other news like Iraq, Israel, Missouri, et cetera, that they should be focusing on. My question is, what do you think the political reason for their doing this is?"

Limbaugh: "Well, interesting question. You know, I'm the guy that says there's politics in everything and you've gotta be able to spot it, and you're right, there is here."

I listen to Limbaugh on a semi-regular basis....just for the fun of it. What I have found to be the hate-radio jock's biggest shortcoming is....projection. Rush has a very serious, perhaps fatal, case of projection. Projection is a mindset where a person projects onto others, usually opponents, the attributes of the person doing the projecting.

Desperately Seeking Equivalency

By The Reverend Published: August 12, 2014

Sometimes I write about the "both sides do it" Village media syndrome. The reason "both sides do it" journalism offends me is because it is dishonest. Today, the Beacon reprinted a dishonest "both sides do it" piece by Steve Chapman of the Chicago Tribune which can stand as the poster child of "both sides do it" writing.

Congressional Democrats are lining up behind a constitutional amendment to allow restrictions on campaign contributions and spending, and Republicans, to their everlasting credit, are opposed.

Weeks ago, Democratic Senator Tom Udall introduced an amendment to the Constitution to counter the egregious Citizens United ruling.....

The constitutional amendment would reverse dangerous Supreme Court decisions like Buckley v. Valeo and Citizens United and rein in the unprecedented flood of secret money in the campaign finance system. It would allow Congress to regulate the raising and spending of money, including so-called "Super PAC" independent expenditures, while giving states the same authority to regulate campaign finance at their level.

Hillary, The Neo-Con

By The Reverend Published: August 11, 2014

In 2008, I encouraged readers to vote for Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primaries. I have never regretted doing so. While it is true that Obama has disappointed in several key areas of policy, or lack thereof.....I still believe Obama is as close to a progressive president as we're likely to get in our declining oligarchy. Hillary Clinton, as we shall see, is a neo-conservative's neo-conservative

All the Very Serious have simply written off Obama's final two presidential years....and are now a-hankering for Hillary. Hillary is part of the Very Serious crowd, and if she runs for president, she will likely win.

That said, the talking heads who despise Obama will be all over Hillary's latest interview in The Atlantic by Jeffrey Goldberg.....

(Hillary) suggested that she finds (Obama's) approach to foreign policy overly cautious, and she made the case that America needs a leader who believes that the country, despite its various missteps, is an indispensable force for good.

Malaysian Airliner.....Botched Putin Assassination Attempt?

By The Reverend Published: August 10, 2014

Have you noticed how the Malaysian airliner tragedy has been lost in the daily short-attention-span news cycle? There's a reason why that is the case....

U.S. intelligence analysts are weighing the possibility that the shoot-down of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was a botched attempt by extremists in the Ukrainian government to assassinate Russian President Vladimir Putin whose aircraft was returning from South America the same day, according to a source briefed on the U.S. investigation.

Far fetched? Alex Jones-style nonsense?

War Is Politics By Other Means

By The Reverend Published: August 9, 2014

Senator Grampy Carpertbomb (R-AZ) has spent a long time parading around the Senate floor advocating for war. Any war. McCain is an odd fellow. Captured during America's long crime against the Vietnamese and held as a POW, one would think that Johnny Mac would, over time, not be so hellbent on starting more wars. But McCain's history has proven otherwise.

The Arizona senator's first answer is always giving war a chance. Perhaps it's because the war McCain participated in became understood as a U.S. loss.....that explains the elderly senator's desire to bomb almost anyone at the drop of a hat.

Whatever the reason, McCain has become a national embarrassment.....not only during his cheerleading for the Bush Wars and his "we are all Georgians now" silliness, but in his shoot-first mentality during the Obama presidency as well.

Here is McCain's response to Obama's announcement of renewed airstrikes in northern Iraq....

Drone Strikes Yellowstone

By The Reverend Published: August 8, 2014

Like guns, drone ownership, I'm certain, will eventually be defended as a 1st AND 2nd amendment right.

I'll explain, but on a Reuters story....

On Wednesday, a tourist in Yellowstone National Park was attempting to take a super-rad photo with his super-rad camera-equipped drone when he lost control of the drone and crashed it into the park’s largest geothermal hot spring, possibly damaging the natural wonder.

It was not clear if the drone that crashed Grand Prismatic Spring on Saturday and sank into its depths would damage the geothermal feature, park spokesman Al Nash said, and officials were still trying to decide whether to remove it.

Our Intelligent Species

By The Reverend Published: August 7, 2014

Human beings are said to be an intelligent species.

Yesterday I referred readers to the multiple Siberian craters apparently caused by global warming melting the arctic permafrost and releasing huge amounts of methane, a greenhouse gas 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

Today, I would refer you to a article by Lindsay Abrams.

....scientists in the Arctic discovered massive plumes of methane escaping from the seafloor....

Climate Scientists (Hoaxsters) Explain Multiple Siberian Craters

By The Reverend Published: August 6, 2014

I've been noticing that the A B Journal has kind of morphed into The LeBron Times, or something, these last few weeks. While I have always thought that LeBron was a class act for a professional sports figure....and it's nice that he's from Akron and all.....I'm not sure his return to the Cleveland Cavaliers warrants THAT many articles in the city's only paper.

But bloggers don't know mind.

Oh and hey, climate scientists don't know anything either....except where their next "welfare" grant is coming from.

Remember hearing about the 98-feet-in-diameter crater that appeared in Siberia recently? Well.....there's now two more of those craters in the same region. One is 45 feet in diameter, the other 13 feet in diameter. More are expected.

Intelligence Committee: No Wrongdoing Over Benghazi, Village Slumbers

By The Reverend Published: August 5, 2014

The House Permanent Committee on Intelligence moved on Thursday to declassify a report on the 2012 terrorist attacks in Benghazi.

“The Intelligence Committee….reaches the same noncontroversial conclusions – that the initial talking points provided by the intelligence community were flawed because of conflicting assessments not an intention to deceive, that there was no stand down order, that the diplomatic facilities lacked adequate security, and that our personnel at the scene acted bravely and appropriately,” said Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif), a member of the committee. Schiff also sits on the House’s select committee on Benghazi.

Did Ukrainian Military Shoot Down Malaysian Airliner?

By The Reverend Published: August 4, 2014

Just about over....

Israeli media, on the 27th day of the fighting, reported that most Israeli troops had pulled out of Gaza, and Reuters TV footage showed a column of Israeli tanks and dozens of infantrymen leaving the enclave.

The Palestinian death toll is close to 1800, primarily civilians. 64 Israeli soldiers have died along with 3 Israeli civilians. Somewhere between 8000 and 9000 Palestinians have been injured or wounded, nearly half a million Palestinians have been displaced out of a total population of approximately 1.7 million. Property damage is off the charts.

Hamas will claim victory by pointing to the five dozen Israeli soldiers they killed....and Israel will claim victory by pointing to the "terror tunnels" they have destroyed.

Obama To Perform Exorcism

Big day yesterday at the Israeli slaughterhouse. Israeli scoreboard now stands at 1712 dead Palestinians, 80% of whom are civilians. Some 200 Gazans were extinguished yesterday alone. 63 Israeli soldiers now dead with still only 3 Israeli civilians having been killed.

Benjamin Netanyahu put the Obama administration in it's place yesterday for trying to help stop the killing through ceasefire negotiations. Bibi chastised America's John Kerry and senior U.S. officials telling them "not to ever second guess me again."

That is what happens when the U.S. Congress unanimously votes, repeatedly, to defend everything Israel does. Now the Bibi flea on the Israeli dog's tail is wagging the U.S. dog.
