GOP Senator John Thune, representing the powerful in South Dakota, spoke of his disappointment that the Democratic president, reviled by conservatives and Republicans for 4 years running, didn't do any "outreach" towards Republicans in the address.....
"It did seem that he wasn't doing the kind of outreach that he needs to do if he wants to get things accomplished in a second term," Thune said. "We'll see how it's received."
My favorite.....Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell....
“It was basically a liberal agenda directed at an America that we still believe is center-right, and I don’t think that’s a great way to start off the second term if your idea here is to achieve bipartisan solutions,” he said.
There it is. It's always there. "America...we still believe is a center-right nation..." This is always the mantra of the GOP and the media which serves the GOP. Always.
1) A woman's right to choose....
A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll reports that seven in 10 respondents oppose Roe v. Wade being overturned, which is the highest percentage on this question since 1989.
Does that sound like the nation is center-right in it's political views?
2) Legalizing same-sex marriage......
53% of all people polled in a recent USA Today support same-sex marriage. 73% of 18-19 year olds support gay marriage. Same-sex marriage. How in the world would that statistic reinforce the notion that politically, Americans lean conservative?
The Dream Act, legislation making citizenship possible for those brought here by their parents,...if certain conditions are met....military service, etc......is favored by 70% of all Americans. Giving undocumenteds a "pathway to citizenship" (what conservatives call amnesty) is favored by 57% of all Americans polled.
4) Climate change....
78% of Americans claim that climate change is happening. 80% say it's a serious problem. Tell me....someone, anyone.....what in those numbers causes Mitch McConnell to believe that the U.S. is still a center-right nation?
5) Tax increases on rich versus cutting public spending....
67% of all respondents in a NTEU Survey agree that increasing taxes on the wealthy should be done before cutting public spending. Those Americans favoring raising taxes on the wealthiest in lieu of cutting Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid have always been over 60%.
All these statistics lead to a conclusion that Americans are still ideologically center-right.....how? They don't. These poll results....and hundreds just like them.....describe a progressive nation and not a center-right nation.
What's worse.... Republicans and conservatives know this. That is expressly why the Frank Luntz's of the conservative world have instructed Republicans and their media to use the phrase, 'America is a center-right nation'...as often as possible. You know, like the phrases....'death tax', 'death panels', 'amnesty', '47% takers', 'we're bankrupt', 'Obama is a socialist, Muslim, not a citizen', etc., etc.
It's what Republicans call "messaging".....it's what I call 'the opposite of the truth.'
No, America is not a center-right nation politically or ideologically. That explains why the presidential popular vote in 5 out of the last 6 elections broke towards the Democratic candidate. That explains why during the worst economic recovery in some 60 years, voters re-elected Democrats in 2012, not Republicans.
That also explains why Republicans have been working to bust-up unions in Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. It explains why two dozen 'red' states worked to game the electoral system by passing entirely unnecessary voter ID laws which suppress Democratic votes. It explains why Republicans are now working on gaming the Electoral College one state at a time.
What explains these actions by Republicans? Why would Republicans go to such extreme measures? Answer: America is NOT a center-right nation....it is a progressive nation.
Not only do numerous polls and recent elections demonstrate that truth but also the actions of Republicans realizing that they are out of touch with the American people. The only way the conservative political party, the Republican Party, can compete nationally in a center-left country....is to cheat, game the system, work the refs....and lie. That's all that's left for a political party whose tenets have been rejected by the American people and yet still refuses to reform it's ideological backwardness.
So, yes....Obama's 2nd Inaugural speech may have sounded progressive or even liberal to many conservative-types....but it wasn't, really. And it wasn't because Obama is some amalgamation of Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez either.
It's because 2012 America is a progressive nation.
