You may have already heard that GOP presidential candidate, Mitt Romney, was booed during his speech to the NAACP Convention yesterday in Houston. It was perhaps Romney's most cynical moment. At first, I gave Romney some credit because, unlike George W. Bush, Mitt agreed to speak to the minority group as a presidential candidate who would like to be the president of all Americans...not just one privileged class with pale skin.
But after examining what Romney said during his Houston speech....and then later what he said in Montana last night....I see Romney's speech before the NAACP as just another opportunity to bait the far right base. Yes....that's what I said, the far right base.
My claim should not come as a surprise. Everything.....and I mean everything....Republicans have been doing, saying, obstructing, and lying about for the last 3 1/2 years has been for the purpose of rallying far right voters. Always rallying far right voters. That's what a shrinking and feckless political party comes to when it refuses to repent, re-evaluate and reform.
Think about the scenario. Romney stands up in front of an all black audience from the NAACP and he has the testicles to say this....
Third, I will reduce government spending. Our high level of debt slows GDP growth and that means fewer jobs. If our goal is jobs, we must, must stop spending over a trillion dollars more than we earn. To do this, I will eliminate expensive non-essential programs like Obamacare, and I will work to reform and save Medicare and Social Security, in part by means-testing their benefits.
Set aside for now the disinformation that national debt is slowing GDP growth and eliminating jobs.....and focus on the question of... why would a GOP presidential candidate, delivering a prepared speech to an all black audience, refer to the Affordable Care Act as "Obamacare"? Why would he do that?
I would suggest to you that it was for the purpose of creating the 15 second-long booing which followed. Baiting the all-black audience to boo by saying, as president, he would repeal "Obamacare" was staged, calculated. Why? Because Romney....identical in every way to all of today's Republicans....was baiting his own conservative base. It's all that any GOP elected-official-wannabe ever does.
With Romney's Obamacare call out.....Mitt was demonstrating to angry, angry, extremist conservatives that he's unafraid to stick it to Obama right in front of all of Obama's "people." During the GOP primaries, many angry conservatives criticized Romney for not being more like Newt. Newt won South Carolina by throwing out abrasive, hateful, bombastic, wingnutty rhetoric to citizens of the first state to secede.
Yesterday, in Houston, standing before an all black audience, Mitt Romney did his best Gingrich imitation....proving in the end, like Newt had done earlier, that he is not presidential material. But he excited the Tea-Fox-Rush-Beck-Breitbart-Party members. Made them want to holler, 'hell yeah....give it to them.'
And that is why Romney threw out the sure-to-create-a-negative-response "I'll repeal Obamacare" line. To bait angry far right voters to come out and vote for him in November.
But I gotta' tell ya'.....it's what Romney said later yesterday in Montana which really opens up a window on the Mormon's soul....
“I hope people understand this, your friends who like Obamacare, you remind them of this, if they want more stuff from government tell them to go vote for the other guy -- more free stuff," he said at a fundraiser in Montana on Wednesday night. "But don't forget nothing is really free.”
Referencing his NAACP speech, Romney said that he did not alter his message according to his audience. "When I mentioned I am going to get rid of Obamacare they weren't happy," he said, adding that, "That's ok, I want people to know what I stand for and if I don't stand for what they want, go vote for someone else, that's just fine."
"Free stuff." Often on this blog I read comments just like what Romney said later in the day yesterday in response to the NAACP audience booing. Minorities, and especially blacks, vote for candidates based on the "free stuff" that candidate promises he'll dole out to blacks and other minorities.
That is what Romney really thinks....about blacks. And it is reprehensible.
But I also think that Romney's later comments were all part of the scripted plan yesterday to.....once again....cater to the prejudiced and fevered minds of far right voters. Mitt Romney, the 2012 GOP presidential candidate, a GOP candidate unloved and unappreciated by his own voter base, purposely chose to use the euphemism, "Obamacare", in front of an all-black group in an attempt to excite and arouse his angry, dead-ender voting base to love his candidacy more.
Reprehensible......sad.....and pitifully pathetic.
