There has been a lie circulating for years now within media which portrays President Obama as the biggest government spender in the known galaxy.
Example: Forbes, June 2012....President Barack Obama is the biggest spender in the history of the world.
Example: Willard Romney...."Since President Obama assumed office three years ago, federal spending has accelerated at a pace without precedent in recent history."
I know it will come as a complete surprise....so brace yourself.... but.....corporate media systematically lies and misleads the public. So do politicians.
The lie that has Obama as the biggest government spender in all of history is based on a very sneaky and slick sleight-of-hand.....card trick, if you will,.....which places responsibility for the last fiscal budget of the George W. Bush administration...FY2009....onto President Obama.
The bogus-news outlet, Breitbart.com....
“Obama’s own fiscal 2013 budget ... shows federal spending increasing from $2.983 trillion in 2008 to an all time record $3.796 trillion in 2012, an increase of 27.3%” and, “before Obama there had never been a deficit anywhere near $1 trillion.”
Notice specifically how the lie is framed. The 2008 FY budget was $2.983 trillion. That is true, give or take. But the 2008 budget wasn't the final FY budget of the Bush administration. The 2009 budget was the final FY budget of the Bush administration.
The fiscal year budget of the federal government runs from October to October. What that means to the discussion is that the 2009 FY budget, set in October of 2008 when W. was still the president, covered government spending from October of 2008 through October of 2009.
Here's Rex Nutting of MarketWatch explaining....
“The 2009 fiscal year, which Republicans count as part of Obama’s legacy, began four months before Obama moved into the White House. The major spending decisions in the 2009 fiscal year were made by George W. Bush and the previous Congress. Like a relief pitcher who comes into the game with the bases loaded, Obama came in with a budget in place that called for spending to increase by hundreds of billions of dollars in response to the worst economic and financial calamity in generations.”
Those....like Mitt and Breitbart....all of Fox.....and.....well, you know.....would have you believe that Obama is responsible for increased government spending decided, locked in, BEFORE he was inaugurated.
Here's CNN fact checking claims that Obama "tripled the deficit" in his first year as president....
Obama was essentially correct when he said he inherited a budget deficit of $1.3 trillion. Though the budget deficit for 2008 was a then-record $458.6 billion, the CBO issued a projection in January 2009, just days before Obama took office that the budget deficit would reach $1.2 trillion that year, before the cost of any new stimulus plan or other legislation was taken into account.
$1.2 trillion...in 2009 deficits....baked into President Obama's first inauguration cake.....none of which was his doing.
To conservative critics who are most likely wagging their heads just about now.....
What about the so-called stimulus, they will ask, with its $787 billion price tag? Or the omnibus fiscal-year 2009 appropriations bill? And how about Cash for Clunkers and Obama's expansion of the children's health insurance program? Didn't these all boost spending in 2009?
The answer is yes. But these boondoggles amounted to just a tiny percentage of FY2009 spending — about $140 billion out of a $3.5 trillion budget.....
Now, I want you to pay close attention to what comes next. According to The Hill, a rag of a Republican media source,.....
The federal budget deficit will fall to $845 billion in 2013.
The federal deficit was $1.2 trillion the day Obama took office......the deficit will be $845 billion in 2013. Now I would ask you to do the math yourself.....but I want to do it for you.
$1.2 trillion MINUS $845 billion equals a reduction of the nation's deficit since Obama took office of roughly $355 billion.
Far from "tripling the deficit", Obama has overseen a reduction of the deficit.
Okay, but what about this idea that President Obama is the "biggest spender in the history of the world?"
Reagan 1st term.....+8.7% annualized growth in government spending.
Reagan 2nd term....+4.9%
Clinton 1st term........+3.2%
Clinton 2nd term.......+3.9%
G.W. Bush 1st term......+7.3%
G.W. Bush 2nd term......+8.1%
Obama 1st term.............+1.4%
Here is the year by year rundown of Obama's spending in his first term....
• In the 2009 fiscal year — the last of George W. Bush’s presidency — federal spending rose by 17.9% from $2.98 trillion to $3.52 trillion.
• In fiscal 2010 — the first budget under Obama — spending fell 1.8% to $3.46 trillion.
• In fiscal 2011, spending rose 4.3% to $3.60 trillion.
• In fiscal 2012, spending is set to rise 0.7% to $3.63 trillion, according to the Congressional Budget Office’s estimate of the budget that was agreed to last August.
• Finally in fiscal 2013 — the final budget of Obama’s term — spending is scheduled to fall 1.3% to $3.58 trillion.
So, it appears as if the claim that Obama has been the biggest spender in the galaxy is just so much hooey......and to boot....reality, and math, inform us....to the contrary.....President Obama has presided over the lowest rate of growth period in government spending since Dwight Eisenhower was president. At a numbingly low growth rate in government spending of 1.4%.
The hoot here is that for over 4 years now......facts be damned.....Obama has been portrayed by his enemies as a bigtime, reckless, socialist spender.....OMG, "he's the biggest spender in the history of the world."
Ain't true, they have been lying to us the entire time.
