About This Blog
Bipartisanship involves agreement, consensus. As we've seen, there's been very little room for agreement between Democrats and Republicans in the last few years. For quite awhile now, Americans have given Congress historically low marks for not working together to solve our nation's problems...for not working in a bipartisan fashion. But examples of bipartisanship have still been difficult to find.
Except for when it comes to America's killing machine.
The one policy area where President Obama is not under constant attack from Republicans is national defense. There's a good reason for that. Bipartisanship. Republicans and Democrats, with few exceptions, now agree that the U.S. is in an endless war....a war without end....a war we will "fight" perpetually. The "long war."
We can never know when it will be safe to stop waging endless war. Even to discuss such a question would be a threat to national security....a signal of weakness to our "enemies."
When it comes to torture, indefinite detention, pre-emptive wars, offshore gulags, secrecy, collateral damage, presidents ordering assassinations even of U.S. citizens, the use of drones, warrantless wiretapping, or waging undeclared war in 6 or 7 Muslim countries simultaneously......the R's and the D's have almost reached total bipartisan bliss.
America is a military Empire, enforcing it's will on the rest of the world....also referred to as "spreading freedom"....and both political parties are in agreement on continuing those policies. The proof that the R's and D's have reached bipartisan nirvana on national security is seen in the dearth of serious criticism from the right directed towards Obama on those national security issues I listed. Indeed, many of the right's most lawless and bloodthirsty members...John Bolton, Dick & Liz Cheney, Richard Perle.... have heaped praise upon the Kenyan Socialist illegally occupying the Oval Office for his willingness to accept and expand the lawless, cruel and inhumane policies of the previous administration.
That is why the recent political back and forth over the killing of Osama Bin Laden one year ago makes me sick. Obama makes me sick for featuring the killing of Bin Laden in his campaign by contrasting Mitt Romney's 2008 comment...." I'm not willing to move heaven and earth" to get Bin Laden, to get one person. Romney makes me sick by saying that "any president would have made the call to off Bin Laden....even Jimmy Carter."
Make no mistake here.....both presidential candidates are in full bipartisan agreement on not only the order to execute Bin Laden, but also on staying the course of endless war in multiple Muslim nations, ordering assassinations, offshore gulags, more pre-emptive wars .....and all the rest of it.
Even the Akron Beacon Journal editors, the centrist accommodators that they are, put it this way....
The president has kept the heat on al-Qaida in ways that should please Republicans, deploying the necessary elements of war and law enforcement.
Well, yes he has. While both sides rabid partisans continue to go at the opposing team's throat on virtually every other issue.....Obama has pleased Republicans with his continuation and expansion of the Bush-Cheney policies of unilateral foreign killings without accountability. This fall will mark 11 years of continual foreign killings without accountability....without any clear objectives....and with no end in sight.
But hey, Obama and the Democrats are pleasing Republicans in true bipartisan fashion by continuing and expanding the lawless, blood-shedding ways of the Bush-Cheney cabal. See? Democrats can be just as bloodthirsty and cruel and lawless as Republicans now, so let's all join hands and sing the Bipartisan Spangled Banner. The era of big resistance to wanton killing and cruelty is over.
No matter that tens of thousands of Muslims are being freshly incentivized to hurt America and Americans because of our bipartisan bloodthirstiness and lawlessness. No matter that our bipartisan killing machine is making the threat of Islamic extremism....worse. No matter that our actions and policies of cruelty and bloodlust are placing Americans in more danger, not less. All that matters is that our policies of cruelty and killings are fully bipartisan. Bipartisanship is the true test of whether American policies are good and right. Just like with invading Iraq. Bipartisan, and it all worked out so great.
And so, our traveling circus presidential campaign pretends to argue over the event of the execution of Bin Laden because there's no argument between players when it comes to the larger lawless and savage 11 year-long campaign to expand the Empire in the hopes of controlling the mid-east region. Pure bipartisan bliss. No need, even, to discuss it.....it's settled.
That's what makes me sick.
No bipartisan agreement....no Kumbayah moment....can be reached on how much the poor, the elderly, women, students and the vulnerable should be willing to sacrifice for the sake of our wealthy overlords....oh, no. Bipartisanship on domestic spending cannot be attained.
But when it comes to killing foreign citizens....detaining and/or torturing suspicious foreigners....waging pre-emptive wars....drone-killing Muslim women and children.....and generally throwing our military muscle around in any way we choose....Republicans, Democrats, and Americans are all in bipartisan agreement.
And that's the clearest indicator that America is in decline.
