The one topic missing from most of the Main Stream Media's "reporting" concerning Iraq, the quagmire formerly known as a sovereign nation, is what Iraq has that the West wants. The oil. Iraq contains, under it's sands, the second largest reservoir of oil in the world, second only to Saudia Arabia.
Knowing that this is the case (and it certainly is no secret) one would think that the media would have been more willing to dig a bit deeper in their "investigating" and "questioning" of the powerful in the run-up to quagmire, but one would be wrong.
Even now, after 4+ years of ongoing quagmire, the timid and obedient media still has difficulty ginning up enough courage to bring up the obvious gorilla-in-the-quagmire-room.
Here's something from the AP via Talking Points memo, that I think is, like, pertinent to any discussion about the quagmire.....
Texas' Hunt Oil Co. and Kurdistan's regional government said Saturday they've signed a production-sharing contract for petroleum exploration in northern Iraq, the first such deal since the Kurds passed their own oil and gas law in August.
A Hunt subsidiary, Hunt Oil Co. of the Kurdistan Region, will begin geological survey and seismic work by the end of 2007 and hopes to drill an exploration well in 2008, the parties said in a news release. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Josh Marshall adds this to the AP snippet....
From Hunt's bio: "In October 2001 and again in January 2006, Mr. Hunt was appointed by President George W. Bush to the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board in Washington, D.C." Link
Now allow The Reverend to be clear here....I have no problem with international companies seeking to expand their businesses throughout the world. That seems like a natural part of their....umm....business. And THAT is the point. It's THEIR business....not the U.S. taxpayers business, not the U.S. military's business, not the almost 4000 dead American soldiers business.
From before the beginning of the quagmire, many of those who were against invading and occupying Iraq, including myself, pointed out the transparently obvious motivation of why Ex-Oil Patch Leaders were deceiving uninformed Americans in order to lead us into a permanent military presence in the center of the middle east.
All dissenters were, and still are, villified.
Now with the Hunt news comes the question.....is all this pure coincidence? Hunt being on Bush's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board and the Hunt Oil Co. now announcing a production sharing contract with northern Iraq......just coincidence?
I think the answer is found by answering another question. Was this Hunt Oil story to be found in the Main Stream Media? And if it was....was it given any prominence whatsoever? And if not.....why not?
But don't forget, as you are seeking to answer those questions,.....it's not about the oil.
