Cafeteria Amnesiacs

By The Reverend Published: September 16, 2012

Conservative media in America have perfected what I would call a unique skill.

Cafeteria Amnesia.

Just select what you want to forget, place it on your tray, go to the checkout, and then throw anything you want to forget into the trash. When finished, the political event, quote or study chosen in order to forget it.....can't be recalled ever again.

Two examples...

The first is the sleight of hand, selective amnesia which broke out following 9-11. It is a historical fact that the Supreme Court actually awarded George W. Bush the presidency in 2000. Yes, George W. Bush was the president of the United States of America starting January 20, 2001. Sometimes that's hard to remember, thanks to conservative media.

You see, after 9-11, conservative media, fearful that George and Dick would be blamed for not preventing the most significant attack on American soil since Pearl Harbor, ....immediately began to re-write history. Americans would never hear how the Bush administration failed to defend the nation from an outside attack on 9-11. We had been attacked, we were at war, and no criticism, or hint of criticism of the Bush CIC would be tolerated.

Press Secretary Ari Fleischer at the time reminded journalists that they had better watch what they say.

The question of why Bush-Cheney did not protect the country on 9-11 could not be asked or answered for fear of being deemed a "terrorist sympathizer."

Then, conservative media, working hand in glove with neo-conservative officials, began to spread the new amnesia. The finely tuned new meme became, 'Bush-Cheney have kept the nation safe after 9-11.'

Here's Jebby Bush only two weeks ago, apparently afflicted with the new conservative amnesia....

“My brother, well,” he (Jebby) began, referring to former president George W. Bush, “I love my brother.” He went on to add, more arguably: “He is a man of integrity, courage and honor. And during incredibly challenging times, he kept us safe.”

The worst attack on the "homeland" happened while George W. Bush was CIC.....and yet, "he kept us safe." And for those criticizing Barack Obama right now for not acting pre-emptively in Libya and Egypt to prevent renewed violence and protesting, this....

The direct warnings to Mr. Bush about the possibility of a Qaeda attack began in the spring of 2001. By May 1, the Central Intelligence Agency told the White House of a report that “a group presently in the United States” was planning a terrorist operation. Weeks later, on June 22, the daily brief reported that Qaeda strikes could be “imminent,” although intelligence suggested the time frame was flexible.

"a group presently in the U.S." is a bit of new information. If there was a group "presently in  the U.S." might think that a president, a CIC, would take serious notice and, you know, do something. Instead, 9-11 happened, our 11 year old war began....and Bush, astonishingly, became the president who "kept us safe."

That my blog selective amnesia....or Rove's claim...."created reality."

In the same way, Burger King-style amnesia (have it your way), broke out at the end of Bush's term, starting in the fall of 2008. You might remember the fall of 2008.....when the worst economic collapse in modern U.S. history attacked the American people.

Better Markets released a study this past week which confirmed that the financial collapse which began under George W. Bush's presidency cost the nation $12.8 trillion in....

...long-term unemployment, lost household wealth, foreclosures, government bailouts, emergency spending measures, and the other actions.

$12.8 trillion. That's approximately three quarters of yearly gross domestic product. All those losses were built into the national financial cake before Barack Obama was inaugurated....yet, conservative media have insisted for 4 years that our national financial situation is to be blamed on "Obama's failed policies."

Many conservative media amnesiacs have treated the financial collapse as just part of a typically normal "business cycle"....when it was anything but. Selective amnesia at work..

The reason the economy is still reeling from the 2008 collapse is not because of "Obama's policies" but because the collapse, itself, had such a devastating effect. $12.8 trillion in losses, all cascading down upon our national economy over the last 4 years.

Talk of 'the worst and slowest economic recovery after a recession' is often heard from these amnesiacs.....but rarely, if ever, are we informed of the depth and breadth of the actual financial collapse of 2008. It's as if conservative media players had chosen to forget all about the Godzilla-sized financial collapse which began under the Decider.

Just like these same amnesiacs of conservative media instantly forgot about George W. Bush's failure to keep us safe on 9-11.
