I would think it would be difficult to sing the praises of an alleged American Dream, let alone preach on about something called American Exceptionalism, with economic evidence such as this.....

Four out of 5 U.S. adults struggle with joblessness, near-poverty or reliance on welfare for at least parts of their lives, a sign of deteriorating economic security and an elusive American dream.

As Redstate.com's Erick Erickson joins Senator Mike Lee's (R-UT) fight to shut the government down rather than fund Obamacare, North Carolina GOP Senator, Richard Burr calls the Lee, Rubio, Cruz, Redstate plan "the dumbest idea I've ever heard of."

Not just a 'dumb idea', mind you. "The dumbest."

Blessed Are The Intolerant...

Zen Master and RNC Chairman Reince Priebus did an interview with David Brody of the Christian Broadcasting Network recently. It seems that Brody, speaking for evangelical Christians, has some concerns in the wake of the GOP "autopsy" report following a disappointing GOP 2012 general election. The "autopsy" concluded that the GOP needed an image makeover because, other than white males, the party can't seem to attract enough voters to win national elections.

David Brody, and his evangelical Christian audience, are oh-so-worried over what an "image makeover" would look like for the GOP. At the top of the concern list is the fear that the GOP "makeover" will include more calls for tolerance. No kidding....devout followers of Jesus of Nazareth in 21st century America actually fear that their political party of choice will encourage them to be more tolerant of America's "others."....

Teas Most Pleased With Zimmerman Verdict

Some unsurprising results are in from a brand new Pew Research Center poll.
The Pew polling questions had to do with the Zimmerman trial and verdict. Overall....

Only 39% of those polled were satisfied with the verdict in the case, while 42% said they were dissatisfied, 19% offering no opinion. 52% say "race is getting more attention than it deserves" while 36% say "the case raises important issues about race that need to be discussed."

Goldman Sachs purchased one of the nation's largest warehousers of metals, Metro International Trade Services, in order to accommodate their commodity "investors" who wanted to own aluminum as an "investment." Goldman now houses one quarter of all aluminum on the market....from which Goldman collects monthly rental fees.

Bust 'Em Up

Four big U.S. banks account for 94.4% of total bank exposure to derivative contracts. JP Morgan Chase, Citi, Bank of America and Goldman Sachs combined hold 94.4% of the $250 TRILLION "in gross outstanding derivative contracts."

Derivative contracts are bets. Very Serious People call them "investments." They are bets. Bets on whether credit default swaps on mortgage derivatives will go up or down in perceived value. Bets on the future price of such commodities as electricity, oil and gasoline. Bets on whether the stock market will go up or down. Bets on whether interest rates will go up or down. BIG bets. And only a few U.S. banks are the bookies holding those bets. $250 trillion in bets.

"Post-Racial America"?

"If you engage me in the street, or more likely, a bar or a club, please refrain from using the phrase 'post-racial America.' Right now in 2013, the concept is a boldface lie and at best a fantasy goal that "We" as a nation and a species are still very far from achieving, and one that a sizable portion of "Us" frankly aren't interested in achieving...."

Taking Back Country By Banning Books

(Former Indiana GOP Governor Mitch) Daniels, an economic conservative with strong approval ratings in his home state, had been encouraged to run by members of the GOP establishment who have been concerned about the quality of the 2012 presidential field. Daniels made his name in Indiana as a cost-conscious governor who experimented in privatizing government services, including the delivery of welfare benefits and the construction of highways.

If you remember, quite a few Republicans wanted Indiana's popular Governor Mitch Daniels to run for President.

Looking Forward......Not Optimistic

Reflecting on America's change of attitude towards gays and gay marriage, columnist for the Guardian, Glenn Greenwald, warned cynics about being too cynical and fatalistic about the future of American progress. No doubt, there's wisdom in that warning. I've often been accused of being too cynical....too doubtful of the alleged good intentions of elected officials....too negative about America's chances to improve it's social contract.

Yes, it is true, as well as a bit surprising, that barriers to granting gay Americans equal justice and treatment before the law have fallen as quickly as they have. Yet, as everyone knows, gays will continue to fight what will inevitably be a long and difficult struggle.

Normalizing Murder?

I wrote a blog post January of this year entitled "Normalizing firearams in public." If you recall, accompanying the "debate" over whether mass-killing-capable, semi-automatic military-style guns should be regulated more carefully by government in the wake of the Newtown slaughter (our elected officials said no, Americans said yes).....there were several reported cases across the country of male patriots carrying loaded AR-15, semi-automatic rifles in public....as some sort of public rebuttal to those calling for stricter controls on the selling and ownership of military-style killing machines.

One brilliant patriot in Riverdale, Utah thought it was an excellent idea to strap his AR-15 across his back, strap on a handgun for good measure, holster additional ammo clips.....and go do some shopping at Penny's. In Sellwood, Oregon, two 22 year old males casually strolled the town's sidewalks each carrying a semi-automatic Bushmaster explaining when asked that...."they were just trying to normalize the image of legally carrying weapons in public."

Key Medical Examiner Evidence: Zimmerman Injuries "Very Insignificant"

Listening to the likes of Sean Hannity, a person can come away with the idea that when Trayvon Martin confronted the stalking George Zimmerman that rainy night last year in Sanford, Fla.....that Trayvon was literally beating Zimmerman to death before the Neighborhood Watchman shot and killed the 17 year old, 158 pound, high schooler, with one hollow point bullet to the chest, pointblank.

Indeed, George Zimmerman's defense attorneys really have nothing else with which to save their client from jail time. Zimmerman's repeated lies to detectives about what transpired that fateful night should have shattered the 29 year-old's credibility with the jury.....and so all that's left is the claim that Zimmerman had to kill Trayvon, or at least shoot him, because Zimmerman thought his actual life was in danger. The self-defense claim.

At least ten rural Colorado counties are taking aggressive steps to form a 51st state, saying their interests are not being met by moves to regulate the oil and gas industry, increase renewable energy, and better regulate guns. Organizers in Kansas and Nebraska are also interested in joining the state they call “North Colorado.”

Disingenuous On Immigration Reform?

After the "skewed polls" in the 2012 election turned out not to be so skewed after all. After MSNBC's Joe Scar proved beyond any shadow of a doubt that he is a major league clueless ass by telling Nate Silver that his bullseye accurate numbers predicting an Obama win last November indicated that Silver was a "joke" and should be kept away from typewriters. After the incumbent president, who couldn't win re-election with such high unemployment numbers.....won re-election.....corporate media newspaper columns with a similar theme started popping up all over. Columns like this one....

Congressional Republicans, eager to gain ground on an issue critical to their party's future, have begun pushing their own proposals to reform the nation's immigration laws in hopes of bringing Hispanic voters back into the GOP fold.

America Held Hostage: Year 5

On the evening of Barack Obama's inauguration, January 20, 2009, key elected and celebrity Republicans met to plot the obstruction, the nullification, of the Obama presidency. The GOP strategy agreed upon that evening over 4 years ago was to obstruct everything Obama,....all legislation, nominations and appointments. Then, retake the House in 2010 and then the presidency and the Senate in 2012.

Gaining control of the majority in the House in 2010 was all the new Confederates could accomplish.....but that new House majority was loudly heard from in 2011. That was the year when the new GOP majority came within an ace of spades of defaulting on all U.S. debt. Not because the U.S. did not have the wherewithal to pay it's debt responsibilities....nothing like that....but instead, because House Republicans wanted to beta test their new hostage taking/ransom demanding strategy in a real time national situation.

Jefferson's..."All Men Are Created Equal"

Is The Story Edward Snowden Or Government Crimes?

The one thing I've learned through blogging these past years is that main corporate-controlled media in America....teevee, radio, print, online.....no longer understands it's job as being an adversary of the powerful for the sake of those who have no power. In fact, most liberals now regard corporate-controlled media as simply a servant of the powerful against the non-powerful.

As Stephen Colbert riffed at a White House Correspondent's Dinner a number of years ago...."reporters", "journalists" today write down what representatives of the powerful tell them and then consider their jobs done. Stenography rather than adversarial reporting.

The Kasich-GOP Declared War On Ohioans

Governor Kasich and his merry band of GOP supply side troglodytes managed to pass and sign into law a 2 year budget on Sunday which not only benefits the rich few in the state at the expense of average citizens, but also properly relegates Ohio women to the back of the autonomy bus, where, apparently, Republicans in Ohio think they belong.

Ohio governors have line item veto power and, indeed, Kasich did use that veto power to strike down 22 line items in the GOP budget proposal bill. But Little-John left the tax cuts heavily favoring the top few percent of Ohioans, and the GOP legislature's fierce attack on Ohio women's right to self-determination, entirely in place. Combine this dastardly betrayal of Ohio women and Ohio workers with Kasich's previous SB 5 union-busting efforts and it is easy to see not only why he should not be re-elected next fall, but also why the GOP majority in Columbus must be replaced.
