It was two years ago when one of the GOP House Leaders, Eric Cantor said this in commemoration of Labor Day....
“Today, we celebrate those who have taken a risk, worked hard, built a business and earned their own success,” the conservative congressman said in a statement. “I am committed to keeping taxes low and reducing red tape to make it easier for Virginia’s small business owners to start hiring again, create more jobs and ensure a thriving economy for the future so more people can achieve the American dream.”
Turning Labor Day on it's head, Cantor celebrated business owners instead. The reason I mention it today is because of the inverted....or perverted....nature of our modern discourse. Up means down in today's land of Orwell. Black is white....and Labor Day is Business Day.
Although everything Cantor said about business owners is wrong....low taxes on rich business owners do not spur economic growth and hiring, cutting business regulations only further enriches already rich business owners at the cost of consumer safety or our environment....and those rich business owners are not our nation's job creators, consumers with money in hand are.
Yes, Cantor was sent home in a shocker GOP primary.....but not because of his views about labor and capital. Cantor was sent home for not being extreme enough for today's neo-confederate voters in Virginia.
But I don't want to talk about Cantor today....instead, I recommend all readers click and read this story.
Chattanooga is one of the only places on Earth with internet at speeds as fast as 1 gigabit per second – about 50 times faster than the US average.
Think about your experiences with your internet provider. Wouldn't you love to have internet speeds up to 50 times faster than you currently have? I would too.
Why is it that all Americans don't have faster and more efficient internet service?
On Friday, the US telecoms industry called on the FCC to block Chattanooga’s plan to expand, as well as a similar plan for Wilson, North Carolina.
You see, I keep hearing how for-profit business is oh-so-much-more-efficient and better than any community-owned, non-profit commie business. And with allegedly cheaper prices to boot.
How is it ....then....that those great, patriotic, boot-strapping, profit-skimming internet provider companies continue to sell us such an inferior product...and at ever-increasing prices?
Monopolies, once put in place through bribes, locally as well as nationally,.....fight like hell, through more bribery, to stop all forms of viable competition. And, just like bought and paid for congressional hawks use fear to continue the gravy train created for monopolistic defense contractors via "permanent war",....so too telecom CEO's....
“With state taxpayers on the financial hook when a municipal broadband network goes under, it is entirely reasonable for state legislatures to be cautious in limiting or even prohibiting that activity.”
'Be afraid...be very afraid of that Chattanooga public internet provider....that's 50 times faster than what we provide, and at cheaper prices. Be afraid because those 50 times faster and much cheaper providers might "go under."'
Sounds like Dick Cheney talking about banning waterboarding.
What the monopolists are really afraid of is this...
EPB’s high-speed network came about after it decided to set up a smart electric grid in order to cut power outages. EPB estimated it would take 10 years to build the system and raised a $170m through a municipal bond to pay for it. In 2009 president Barack Obama launched the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, a stimulus programme aimed at getting the US economy back on track amid the devastation of the recession. EPB was awarded $111m to get its smart grid up and running. Less than three years later the whole service territory was built.
Yes, Chattanooga's super-fast internet service came about, at least partially, because of the Obama stimulus. Contrary to the ragings of corporate and conservative stooges who appear on the teevee.....the Obama stimulus was a success. So successful in the case of Chattanooga that monopolists in the telecom industry are worried that their obscene profits from their internet-providing monopolies are under siege. And it only took three years.
All successful industrialized nations...except for the U.S.....embrace private/public ventures. Until the last decade or so, so did the U.S. But the U.S. is currently in a gonzo-capitalist-tantrum period where oligarchs are celebrated by duncehat-wearing conservative voters as our "job creators." In this Orwellian dreamscape, and as witnessed in Eric Cantor's celebration of business owners on freaking Labor Day a couple of years ago, an inferior internet service at higher prices than the rest of the world pays for superior internet service, means that the rich few need a tax cut and fewer regulations on their monopolies.
Success through continued failure.....I think Orwell might phrase it.
Finally, the biggest reason our national economy hasn't bounced back from the Great Bankster Caper in a more robust way is because of the insistence of our overlords to keep public-employment jobs low. Never before in the history of U.S. recessions has government hiring languished like it has since the TeaHouse nihilists took over Congress. Go look at this chart, if you need proof.
The oligarchs, the nihilist conservatives, and the bought-and-paid-for political whores who vote in Congress are out to destroy the laboring class as we've known it. These "enemies of America" have had some success.....and now it is time, as Chattanooga has demonstrated, as Seattle has demonstrated.....to fight back.
So, join me as I celebrate LABOR tomorrow with a toast to all those who actually work for a living. No matter what conservative know-nothings blather on about....America's workers deserve it now more than ever.
Enjoy your holiday weekend.
