Broad new surveillance powers approved by Congress this month could allow the Bush administration to conduct spy operations that go well beyond wiretapping to include...without court approval...certain types of physical searches on American soil and the collection of Americans' business records, Democratic Congressional officials and other experts said.
New York Times .com article here, it's worth a read. Explains the...surprise!....new, 'gut-FISA bill' actually grants New Super Decider Spy powers. More than they knew about....maybe it was because all the Republicans and 41 Democrats in the House and 16 Democrats in the Senate were, like, so scared, they never read the bloody bill in the first place. Or maybe it's because these politicians are so craven they think absolutely nothing of contributing directly to the destruction of Constitutional guarantees, as long as doing so contributes directly to some imaginary political power.
Here's a paragraph from Scarecrow at Firedoglake reviewing this material. His post is also worth a read if you are interested in this stuff.
The Administration's argument that we were confronted with a dangerous gap in our ability to conduct foreign intelligence, an argument leaked to the media by the Administration and Republican Congressmen and which was used to stampede Congress into enacting another unconstitutional law, gutting long-time and carefully thought out protections for individual rights, was simply a lie. How many times will Congressional Democrats allow themselves to be stampeded by an Administration that simply cannot be trusted to deal in good faith on anything that matters?
The Reverend would answer, "How many ever times Bush feels like stampeding."
Here's how the scoreboard reads: Americans know, by a 2-1 margin, that Bush has been lying about a whole bunch of stuff. We know about the lies before 9-11 that they had no warnings. We know about the blitz of lies in the Iraq quagmire run-up. We know about the Plame case lies. We know about the 'spying on Americans' lies. We know about the torture and the secret rendition and prisons lies. We know all about this stuff.
Why in the hell don't 41 House Democrats and 16 Senate Democrats know this stuff?
Did Charlie Brown know Lucy would move the football? Of course. Went ahead anyway. The Republicans are Lucy in the story, always portraying herself as trustworthy when she never was. But the silly 41 Charlie Browns in the House and those 16 silly Charlie Browns in the Senate still must believe they should be afraid not to believe in the same untrustworthy Lucys.
And we're the superpower.
