"...Clearly Immoral Purposes..."

By The Reverend Published: November 3, 2007

Earlier this week....

Pope Benedict XVI urged Catholic pharmacists on Monday to use conscientious objection to avoid dispensing drugs with "immoral purposes such as, for example, abortion or euthanasia."

In a speech to participants at the 25th International Congress of Catholic Pharmacists, Benedict said that conscientious objection was a right that must be recognized by the pharmaceutical profession.

Such objector status, he said, would "enable them not to collaborate directly or indirectly in supplying products that have clearly immoral purposes such as, for example, abortion or euthanasia."

In his speech, the pope also said that pharmacists have an educational role toward patients so that drugs are used in a morally and ethically correct way.

"We cannot anesthetize consciences as regards, for example, the effect of certain molecules that have the goal of preventing the implantation of the embryo or shortening a person's life," he said. Link

The one area of wingnuttiness that Catholics share with Evangelicals is their belief in the wickedness of abortion.

How it is that the Pope doesn't see the glaring contradiction of his own Church's ongoing sheltering of child abusers while at the same time he tells the world about the sanctity of a clump of cells no larger than the end of a straight beyond my realm of comprehension.

But what would I know? I'm only a lowly Reverend.

Now, however, Benedict has stepped over into the full wingnut three ring circus. Now the lofty and great One, the vicar of the Son of God, the Infallible Representative of the Big Guy In The Sky, is advocating for pharmacists everywhere to object to dispensing emergency contraception or any drugs that would be used in the merciful act of euthanasia.

You see, God wants all women to be pregnant, even when they don't wish to be. And God wants all those suffering from incurable diseases that are accompanied with excruciating buck it up and suffer it out rather than choose a merciful death. That's the "moral" position.

That is what the Representative of God here on earth tells us God wants.

Now I know the Pope is, like, highly regarded, worshipped even,....and I know the Pope is tight with the alleged Creator of the Universe and all that, but still.....the Reverend must object.

Let's only consider the practical aspects of the Pope's latest attack on those who would prescribe drugs for "immoral purposes".

Should people be able to take jobs if they state in advance, because of their consciences, they cannot fulfill all of the duties of that job? Should a Muslim firefighter, for example, be able to stand down for an emergency that involves saving a Jewish family....because he cannot conscientiously save "infidels"?

Should a white grocer be able to deny waiting on a black customer because his religious beliefs inform him that blacks are second class sub-humans? A belief he justifies by twisting up Bible texts.

Can we even function as a society if employees everywhere refuse to carry out the jobs they are employed to do because of some "conscientious objection" to this or that expected task?

Teachers refusing to teach certain students. Builders refusing to build homes for unbelievers. Nursing home workers refusing to look after AIDS patients. Waitresses refusing to serve specific foods or specific customers.

It's simply unworkable.

If people disagree, conscientiously, with the legal practices and behaviour of others....and they disagree so strongly that they can't participate IN ANY WAY with those legal practices and behaviours....and their job REQUIRES that they participate in those same legal practices and behaviours....then they shouldn't be working in that job.

Apologies in advance to God and His Vicar, ...but regarding abortion, euthanasia and conscientiously objecting through refusal to prescribe legal guys are simply wrong.
