Clown Show Kabuki.....Benghazi Edition

By The Reverend Published: October 13, 2012

Republican Darrell Issa spent a year and half and a million dollars holding hearings related to the ATF gun walking program Fast and Furious. There never was any there there.....but to Dipstick Darrell that never much mattered. Political theater is not called political theater for no reason. Here's Dipstick in June, just ahead of the House vote to hold Eric Holder in contempt of Congress for failing to do what Dipstick demanded....

“You don’t lie to Congress, and then lie about lying to Congress and then lie about knowing you lied to Congress and then not fire the people who did all of that and have it be anything but a cover-up,” Issa added.

A total of 129 House members have called for Holder to go. Three U.S. senators, two sitting governors and presumptive GOP presidential nominee, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney join those congressmen in demanding Holder’s ouster.

Indeed, Dipstick Darrell was successful in convincing the House to take a vote to hold AG Eric Holder in contempt of Congress over his alleged "role" in a cover-up, or lying, or withholding evidence, or conspiring to be the closest high level black man to President Obama....take your pick.

The political damage was done.....and that was all that mattered to Dipstick...because later the Inspector General issued a report that exonerated Eric Holder of any wrongdoing....

We determined that Attorney General Holder did not learn about Operation Fast and Furious until late January or early February 2011 and was not aware of allegations of “gun walking” in the investigation until February. We found no evidence that Department or ATF staff informed the Attorney General about Operation Wide Receiver or Operation Fast and Furious prior to 2011.

This week, Dipstick Darrell's Kabuki Theater opened yet another production on Capitol Hill. This time over the violent attack in Benghazi, Libya in September which killed 4 Americans including an ambassador. Just like with the transparently political Fast and Furious hearings, Dipstick has no evidence, whatsoever, of any wrongdoing by the State Department, the White House or President Obama, himself. But there is an election in a few weeks. That fact is inarguable.

If you recall, the Benghazi attack occurred simultaneously with Muslim protests in other Middle Eastern countries over a video mocking Muslim prophet Mohammed. It is true that the protests over the film and the violence in Benghazi happening simultaneously complicated early attempts at explaining what happened and why it happened.

To Mitt Romney, however, it wasn't complicated. It was a political opportunity. And so, Mr. Romney issued a late September 11th press release claiming that President Obama's first response to renewed middle eastern unrest was "to sympathize with those who waged the attack." At the time, Romney's remarks were dismissed by many conservative leaders.....and Romney suffered in presidential-race polling as a result of his reckless comment and timing.

Enter the Dipstick a little over 3 weeks before a presidential election. Fearing that a State Department investigation into the Benghazi attack would fail to produce findings before November 6th, Mr. Issa took it upon himself to exploit and politicize the death of an ambassador pre-emptively, as Mr. Romney did the night of September 11th, by staging a congressional hearing this week on the event.

In sanctimonious opening remarks dripping with doubletalk, Issa explained the "purpose" of the hearings just three weeks before a close presidential contest....

"What went wrong? What should have been done differently? What lessons must we quickly learn so terrorists do not use the attack on Benghazi as a template for other attacks?"

Why not wait until State completes their investigation?

"...their effort will take months if not years. State Department, however, would be unwise to delay efforts to improve how security questions are considered until after this report is complete."

Translation: 'It would be unwise of me and my fellow Republicans to not take this political opportunity, even without full State Department findings, to exploit the death of a U.S. ambassador in the hopes of doing damage to President Obama's re-election hopes. This is especially true with only 3 weeks to go before the general election.'

Yes, the killing of a U.S. ambassador deserves a thorough investigation to find out the facts. But just as in the Fast and Furious ClownShow, Dipstick Darrell didn't convene hearings three weeks before a close presidential election in order to find out what happened in Benghazi. He did so in the hopes of doing political damage to President Obama.

Listening to conservative media these past few weeks, it is crystal clear what is going on here. Benghazi is the new Fast and Furious. The Fox and Fiends screaming-meemies have been frothing at the mouth for nearly a month over it.

But, just as there was no evidence of wrongdoing by AG Eric Holder or President Obama in Fast and Furious, so too, there's no evidence of wrongdoing by the White House or the State Department in the Benghazi attack. Issa knows that....which makes THIS sentence of his opening statement all the richer...

"I hope that Members today will stay focused on the dangers facing our diplomats and not allow the politics of the election season to creep into today’s hearing."

Hope you didn't get any of that Orwellian creamy-richness on ya'.

Republicans didn't care one whit about Fast and Furious. What they cared about was staging a Very Serious-appearing Kabuki ClownShow oh-so-sanctimoniously claiming deep concerns over the death of a Border Agent. What Republicans were really after was Eric Holder's political scalp during a general election year.

And I will submit that Issa Committee Republicans, and their ClownShow media member servants, do not really care about the Benghazi attack. What they care about is staging yet another Kabuki Clown Show three weeks before a presidential election in the hopes of exploiting the killing of a U.S. ambassador en route to accomplishing the Republican Party's number one, and singular, priority.

"Making Obama a one term president."

Congress has never been held in such contempt by the American public. This week, Darrel Issa again demonstrated why that is the case.
