Compassionate Conservatism Dies

By The Reverend Published: June 25, 2010

On March 2nd and 3rd, I blogged about the whacked out, soon-to-retire, Kentucky Senator, Jim Bunning. At the time, Bunning was the designated GOP 'foot dragger' on a bill extending unemployment benefits and federal relief to individual states during the deepest American recession in over 60 years.

After the Senate GOP'ers footdragging tantrum back at the first of March....Republicans voted repeatedly against a cloture vote to slow the process.....the extensions were passed by a final vote of 59-38 in the middle of April, some six weeks after the measure was brought before the Senate.

Bunning and his Batty GOP Brethren in the Senate were doing then what they always do when Democrats hold a majority. Feigning 'fiscal conservancy'.....when the stonewalling is actually meant to make the majority Democrats, and the Obama administration, appear ineffective.

That's the politics GOP'ers have been exercising ever since Rush declared, some two weeks after Obama was inaugurated, that the new Dark Knight, socialist, Muslim-non-American President.....should fail. Rush declared that he wanted Obama to fail....GOP'ers followed their Dear Fat Leader's...umm...lead, and started talking about bringing on Obama's "Waterloo."

Now it's June.....rerun season....

Legislation to extend unemployment subsidies for hundreds of thousands of Americans who have exhausted their jobless benefits teetered on the edge of collapse on Thursday, as Senate Democrats and Republicans traded bitter accusations about who was to blame for an eight-week impasse.

Senate Republicans and a lone Democrat, Ben Nelson of Nebraska, joined forces to filibuster the bill in a procedural vote on Thursday. Visibly frustrated, the majority leader, Harry Reid, Democrat of Nevada, said he would move on to other business next week because he saw little chance of winning over any Republican votes.

Senate Republicans, apparently, are competing with BP's chairman to see who can insult the "small" people more.

Adding insult to an injurious Senate GOP filibuster......a handful of GOP'ers have been making noise about opening a can of "tough love" on those millions of lazy-ass unemployed.

Tea Partyer, Rand Paul...

"As bad as it sounds, ultimately we do have to sometimes accept a wage that's less than we had at our previous job in order to get back to work and allow the economy to get started again... Nobody likes that, but it may be one of the tough love things that has to happen."

Paul is quite engaged, you know, johnny-on-the-spot, taking the pulse of America and all that. 'You lazy-ass unemployed out there....just take a goddamned lower paying job.....quit being a whining baby.'

No word from Rand Paul on where an unemployed person would find...umm....a lower paying job. I'm sure he'll get back to us on that.

To the nutty eye doctor running for the Senate from Kentucky, extending unemployment compensation during our nation's worst recession would make us worse than the dreaded Europeans....

“In Europe, they give about a year of unemployment. We’re up to two years in America.”

To Harry Reid's GOP opponent this November out in Nevada, Sharron Angle, unemployment insurance and unemployment compensation has only "spoiled our citizenry"....

“you can make more money on unemployment than you can going down and getting one of those jobs that is an honest job, but it doesn’t pay as much. … we really have spoiled our citizenry.”

These "spoiled" citizens are of the same fictitious lot as Father Ronnie's "pink Cadillac driving, welfare check cashing, queens." But no matter.....laid off workers during our nation's worse downturn in over 60 years are, by god, getting "spoiled" when government honors their unemployment insurance and pays compensation.

However.....golly gee....the most offensive action by a Republican concerning those lazy, coddled, spoiled unemployment check-cashing bastards....,acting all lazy, coddled and spoiled during a 10+% rate of unemployment period....is Mr Corporate America, Utah's senior Senator, Orrin Hatch....

"Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah)...... has introduced legislation stating that welfare and unemployment beneficiaries would have to pass a drug test to qualify for the government programs."

That's just so extra special.

Blaming the victims while praising and apologizing to the corporate culprits (Joe Barton).....I realize....is a Republican Party platform plank. But drug testing the unemployed as a prerequisite to receiving compensation checks that they are entitled to because their employer paid into the insurance fund? I don't know....that seems extra-prickish.

Of course all this GOP horsesh*t is just that. Republicans are not fiscal conservatives.....even though they are using current deficit numbers as an excuse to block unemployment checks to the "spoiled." We've more than learned that lesson over the last 30 years. "Deficits don't matter", Dick Cheney said, "Reagan proved that." Republican leadership has been proving that over and over again ever since.

No, Republicans are not blocking unemployment check extensions during our nation's highest unemployment rates in 60 years....because they are oh-so-f*cking-worried about deficits. That's not it.

Republicans are forced into saying stupid, heartless and crazy sh*t about the unemployed and about unemployment insurance, Republicans are compelled to filibuster and stonewall help for America's most vulnerable.... in order to demonstrate that Democrats CAN'T govern....can't do as simple a thing as pass an unemployment and state relief extension.

Don't ever forget the GOP strategy....that strategy is corrupt, cynical, deceitful, arrogant, and clueless.....yes.....but it is constant.

They want Obama and the Democrats to fail. If America also fails....well....that's just too bad. Americans whine too much and are too spoiled anyway. Republicans have to regain majority power somehow.
