Could It Be.....Satan?

By The Reverend Published: February 22, 2012

I had not realized how big of a role god would play this election year.

“This is not a political war at all,” Rick Santorum told Catholic students at Ave Maria college. “This is not a cultural war. This is a spiritual war. And the Father of Lies has his sights on what you would think the Father of Lies would have his sights on: a good, decent, powerful, influential country – the United States of America. If you were Satan, who would you attack in this day and age. There is no one else to go after other than the United States and that has been the case now for almost two hundred years, once America’s preeminence was sown by our great Founding Fathers.”

Ricky Santorum was....yes....speaking at a Catholic University in 2008 when he said that stuff. The venue must be factored into any attempt to make heads or tails out of what Rick said. However, I recognize this type of language....and although the concept of Satan, the being, never really made sense to me when long ago I used to prepare weekly sermons....the concept of spiritual man being in a continual war against the darker, albeit invisible, "principalities and powers" allegedly arrayed against standard issue Christian messaging.

Upon first reading Santorum's words....I immediately thought the "Father of Lies" Santorum mentioned had to be Karl Rove ("the Empire creates its own reality now") know, or Rush Limbaugh (the big fat lying liar according to Al Franken's accurate book)...or perhaps Newt Gingrich, the actual father figure of modern conservative political-deceptive-theater.

But Santorum was actually referring to the Father of Lies, Lucifer, Beelzebub, the Serpent, the Prince of Darkness....Satan, himself. "This is a spiritual war", claims Santorum. Anyone know what that means? In fundamental Christian theology, humans, whom we can see, touch and communicate with, are constantly being influenced by invisible agents of the invisible god and those of god's invisible nemesis, Satan. God's invisible agents are continually flapping their wings around us whispering into our consciousness Spike Lee's admonition to "do the right thing." Lucifer's invisible agents, on the other hand, are also working hard to, I guess, subliminally tempt humans into doing the wrong thing.

This alleged invisible battle between good and bad that goes on all around us every single second of every single day is what Santorum means when he mentions "spiritual war." That "war" is waged in our consciences.

Writing Santorum's premise large.....what we would have is all Americans in the midst of a monumental battle between the invisible powers of good and evil. God and Satan...and the hosts of their respective invisible influencers....waging an invisible "tempting" war for the "souls" of U.S. citizens.

To Santorum....Hollywood, the NBA (WTF?), contraception use, abortion, same sex marriage, music, Protestantism, Rhianna's ass...etc, etc.....are all evidence that Satan is moving the American conscience ball closer to his evil goal line. Thus, America is in mortal danger if we don't stop right now, listen to our influencing angels, and all think and behave like fundamentalist Christians.

Santorum describes America's fall to dark forces as a step by step process. First....

"The place where he (Satan) was, in my mind, the most successful and first successful was in academia."

The evidence? Professors, teachers....

"Pursue new truths, deny the existence of truth, play with it because they're smart. And so academia, a long time ago, fell."

Someone tell the teachers and professors in the U.S. that we are post-academia....and further efforts to educate new generations is only the work of the devil. An appetite for learning means that man thinks he can become like know, smart and all. Better to remain a dullard, a least you won't be tempted by pride and vanity.

After education "fell", the Church was next....

"...once the colleges fell and those who were being education(sic) in our institutions, the next was the church."

"...we look at the shape of mainline Protestantism in this country and it is in shambles, it is gone from the world of Christianity as I see it."

Lucifer got to the Protestants....Protestants are "gone", which in "spiritual warfare" talk means all those dark "voice in your ear" influencers who work for Satan have convinced the Protestant Church to join the evil team. Luther's work was all in vain...sigh.

After the educators and the Protestants went over to the dark side...then what?

"After that, you start destroying the Church and you start destroying academia, the culture is where their next success was..."

First the schools, then the Protestant churches,....then the NBA.

Finally, for today, the idiocy of Santorum's worldview is seen in his comprehension of newly-born America.

"He (Satan) didn't have much success in the early days. Our foundation was very strong, in fact, is very strong."

The "early days", when Satan didn't have much success destroying America, the Founding Fathers institutionalized slavery, continued to genocide native Americans, and only recognized white males as deserving of human rights. Santorum states that when our Founders institutionalized those obvious evils...Satan "didn't have much success."

Even though Santorum has a small lead in Michigan and now leads among Republicans in Ohio, where the embarrassing Mike DeWine, in his third endorsement in 6 months, is (for now) backing one who is being tempted by dark forces to do so....should vote for him.

He seems to be a bit....unstable.
