Choosing Your Own News

By The Reverend Published: January 31, 2014

Media outlets such as Fox News and MSNBC have a negative impact on people’s current events knowledge, while NPR and Sunday morning political talk shows are the most informative sources of news, according to Fairleigh Dickinson University’s newest PublicMind survey.

News programs which are intended to inform viewers about....domestic and world news....actually make viewers less knowledgeable about the news.

"Defining Issue Of Our Time"?

By The Reverend Published: January 30, 2014

Most policies favored by Americans would be considered progressive. Tax the rich more. Background checks on all gun transactions. Infrastructure spending. Marriage equality. Roe. Immigration reform. Environmental concerns....and on and on.

Yet, the nation's federal economic policies continue moving us further to the conservative right.

What explains this?

Yes, it's complicated....but yesterday's vote in the Tea House on the farm bill is a perfect example that helps to explain the apparent contradiction, or disconnect.

It Takes A GOP Village....To Respond To SOTU

By The Reverend Published: January 29, 2014

Someone had to listen to the multiple GOP responses to Obama's State of the Union...so that you didn't have to. That person is moi. First up, the pleasant Washington State GOP Representative, Cathy McMorris Rodgers.

Ms. Rodgers focused on "closing the gap." No, no...don't get the wrong idea. Not the income/wealth disparity gap which has developed over the last 30 years in America into a festering obscenity and a convincing argument AGAINST capitalism. No, no....not that gap. The "gap of opportunity." That's the gap Ms. Rodgers said her Republican Party would seek to close.

Bill & Hillary Reruns Begin

By The Reverend Published: January 28, 2014

MSNBC's Joe Scarborough talks.....a lot. But the one thing he has never talked about is what happened in 2001 while he was a GOP congressman....

"FORT WALTON BEACH, FL. - Lori Klausutis, a 28-year-old office worker for Rep. Joe Scarborough (R-Fl), was found dead in the congressman's district office. Police said preliminary findings from the medical examiner's office showed no foul play or any outward indication of suicide."

The State of the Union Is Paralysis

By The Reverend Published: January 27, 2014

No doubt the centrist President Obama will offer up a good speech at tomorrow night's State of the Union address. He's really, really good at giving speeches. But as Obama delivers his speech, he will know, and everyone in the audience will know, that his presidency is basically over.

In a short ad for tomorrow's all day SOTU coverage on MSNBC, Chris Matthews holds up the word "divided", Chris Hayes holds up the word "fractured" and Rachel Maddow holds up the word "polarized." Yes, but I think the most accurate description of the 'state of the union' is.....paralysis. The Union is paralyzed.

Tampons, Dowel Rods & Guns

By The Reverend Published: January 25, 2014

Maybe it's because of 9-11. Perhaps some of it is because a black president sits in the White House. Perchance it just could be all because of America's god...profits.

But one thing is certain. Our county is losing it's collective mind over guns.

"Something Other Than Victims Of Their Gender"

By The Reverend Published: January 24, 2014

Here is what Bill Kristol's favorite 2016 GOP presidential candidate had to say about women, Democrats and somebody he called "Uncle Sugar"......

"If the Democrats want to insult the women of America by making them believe that they are helpless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing for them a prescription each month for birth control because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of the government, then so be it," Huckabee said. "Let's take that discussion all across America."

GOP Has Written It's Own Obituary

By The Reverend Published: January 23, 2014

I agree with Booman's sentiment here....

I think the Republican Party has outlived its usefulness. I don't see it morphing back into something socially acceptable to decent people. I don't see it organically fixing itself the way you would expect a losing party to. It just needs to die.

Massive Bi-Polar Vortex Descends On D.C.

By The Reverend Published: January 22, 2014

March, 2013, NY Times reporting on RNC Chair Reince Priebus' GOP "autopsy" results...

It talks about “developing a forward-leaning vision for voting Republican that appeals to women,” without ever using the words “abortion” or “birth control” or even hinting that the party’s policies on these issues have repelled women by the millions.

First let me explain why this is the case.

"No Evidence of Abuse".....From Totally Secretive NSA Programs

Here he is yesterday defending NSA lawlessness....

War On Women Reaches Supreme Court

By The Reverend Published: January 16, 2014

The Supreme Court heard arguments yesterday in a case considering whether women in Massachusetts are being coddled and given preferential treatment when angry and thuggish anti-abortion protesters are ordered by law to remain 35 feet away from them as they approach and enter abortion clinics.

Challenging the 2007 law, anti-abortion activists say it violated their freedom of speech rights under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution by preventing them from standing on the sidewalk and speaking to people entering the clinics.

What Climate Change?

By The Reverend Published: January 15, 2014

During the period November, 2012 through December, 2013....2258 peer-reviewed articles on climate were written and published by a total of 9137 authors. Only one of the 9137 authors rejected man's contribution to global climate change.

Further, in the last 21 years of peer-reviewed climate literature....only 24 out of 13,950 articles — or two-tenths of a percent — came out and rejected human-caused climate change.

Village: 'Obama Responsible For BridgeGate'

By The Reverend Published: January 13, 2014

I should have known.

I admit that I didn't see it at first....most likely because my normal practice is to examine as much evidence as is available on an issue or topic from as many sources as I can find.....distill that evidence, set aside details that don't pass the smell test....and then form what I consider to be an informed opinion. Readers may, and do, disagree with my opinion....but I always considered that part of the expected warp and woof of political and democratic discourse.

Christie's Lying

By The Reverend Published: January 11, 2014

"What I've seen today for the first time is unacceptable," Christie said in a statement. "I am outraged and deeply saddened to learn that not only was I misled by a member of my staff, but this completely inappropriate and unsanctioned conduct was made without my knowledge."

I am fully aware of the numerous excuses being offered up in defense of what Glenn Beck is now calling the "Fat and Furious" scandal. The sad faces and the somber words of the Morning Blow team speak volumes about our corrupt modern media. Open political bias is the new cool....and now it comes with new and improved gag-inducing compassion.

Republicans Being Trained On How To Be Human

By The Reverend Published: January 10, 2014

President Obama won women voters in 2012 by 11% over Mitt Romney. In their autopsy report following their loss, Republican leaders committed to working harder to win the female vote. The challenge for Republicans in the 2014 midterms, however, is more complex.....

In the 2014 cycle, there will be at least 10 races where House GOP male incumbents face Democratic women challengers.

Obama "Didn't Build That"

By The Reverend Published: January 8, 2014

Grandpa Grumpy and the Huckleberry, the two remaining members of the geriatric grudge band formerly known as The Three Amigos, had what I identified immediately as a 'senior moment' this past weekend while standing in front of teevee cameras.

“The administration's narrative that Iraq's political leadership objected to U.S. forces remaining in Iraq after 2011 is patently false,” said McCain and Graham, .....“We know firsthand that Iraq's main political blocs were supportive and that the administration rejected sound military advice and squandered the opportunity to conclude a security agreement with Iraq."

Do Incentives Only Work On The Wealthy?

By The Reverend Published: January 7, 2014

This cold is not cool.

Looks like the Senate may take a vote today on extending emergency unemployment benefits to 1.3 million Americans who lost benefits January 1. What's still unclear in the Senate is whether enough Republicans will join Democrats to invoke closure and proceed to a full Senate up-or-down vote.

How To Destroy A Liberal Resurgence Before It Begins

By The Reverend Published: January 4, 2014

It started awhile ago. I think when Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) won the election to replace Senator John Kerry. It didn't work with Barack Obama, who has turned out to be a center-right, corporatist president who mostly has favored Republican policies, like the insurance exchanges in the ACA and reducing government spending during a very weak economic recovery marked by high unemployment and low interest rates.

But now, with the election of Bill de Blasio as mayor of New York City....it has begun anew.

Resist The Wealthy Whiners

By The Reverend Published: January 2, 2014

Pushback against Pope Francis' evisceration of supply side economics and condemnation of the idolaters of money.......continues.....

“I’ve told the Cardinal,” (Home Depot billionaire CEO) Langone said, “‘Your Eminence, this is one more hurdle I hope we don’t have to deal with. You want to be careful about generalities. Rich people in one country don’t act the same as rich people in another country.’”
