I learned something yesterday. I learned that if you are dependent on handouts from the federal government to make your living.....and you owe the federal government over one million dollars in unpaid fees.....and you refuse to pay...militia members and Tea Party Patriots have your back.
In Tea and Militia-Land, when one of your members jettisons personal responsibility to honor agreements entered into with the federal government.....and decides to simply freeload off of.....Uncle Sugar's Santa-bag of assets....Fox, the Teas and the Militias have your back when the government finally says enough.
The dispute between Bundy and federal land managers began in 1993 when he stopped paying fees of about $1.35 per cow-calf pair to graze public lands that are also home to imperiled animals such as the Mojave Desert tortoise. The government also claims Bundy has ignored cancellation of his grazing leases and defied federal court orders to remove his cattle.
I had always thought that conservative Teas and Patriots hated those Americans who were always gaming the system, you know, to get those multi-million dollar monthly food stamp cards and other Uncle Sugar goodies. But apparently, I was mistaken. It seems that if you freeload off government, owe the government $1 million+ in back fees and are willing to still flip the bird to government officials when they seek to collect.....some Teas and Patriots are willing to fight to the death defending such dependency and irresponsibility.
A man who identified himself as Scott, 43, said he had traveled from Idaho along with two fellow militia members to support Bundy.
"If we don't show up everywhere, there is no reason to show up anywhere," said the man, dressed in camouflage pants and a black flak jacket crouched behind a concrete highway barrier, holding an AR-15 rifle.
"I'm ready to pull the trigger if fired upon," Scott said.
Who knew that the the New Revolution would begin with Pure Patriot League members willing to die on the front lines fighting for rancher welfare handouts, huh? I gotta tell ya....it came as quite a surprise to this blogger.
I had always been under the impression that Tea-flavored citizens and Patriotic Militia members swore by their rugged individualism and totally independent, boot-strapping abilities. Getting government off their backs and out of the way, I had always been told, was all that the New Revolutionaries were seeking. Just too damn much Big Government....was the Problem, I had often heard from these new Super Patriots of the Conservative Kind.
But based on the Cowpoke Adventure in Nevada over the weekend.....I find that I have misunderstood what it was these new Patriots were saying all along.
When I first learned about the 21st Century Patriotic Nevada-Alamo standoff on Sean Hannity's hatefest radio program Friday afternoon.....I was amazed at what I heard. Conservative celebrities were defending the free-loading rights of contractual-delinquents to continue to freeload from Uncle Sugar's goody bag.
More, not only were conservatives defending the dependent rancher in Nevada....who defiantly refused to honor his end of a contract, while insisting he had the right to continue to freeload.....these conservatives blamed the Big-footing Government for daring to challenge the longstanding, continuous freeloading of the dependent rancher.
So, I was forced to recalibrate my understanding of Teas and Patriots. Now, I realize that for conservative real Americans, out there in real America....there is irresponsible, parasitical dependency on government which is bad and needs condemned and stopped....and then there is irresponsible, parasitical dependency on government which is good, patriotic and righteous which is worthy of defending with your life.
Hey, who says The Reverend can't learn anything new?
My epiphany helps to explain why Teas and Patriots rightfully cheered when SNAP allowances were cut...instead of amassing on the banks of the Potomac equipped with AR-15's to defend the rights of hungry, poor Americans to get stuff from the government for, you know, free. Those hungry Americans deserved those SNAP cuts because they simply refuse to take personal responsibility for feeding themselves.
Dependent conservative ranchers, on the other hand, who renege on their contractual responsibility and suck over one million dollars from Santa's government issue bag and put that cool million in their own pocket.....refusing to pay what they agreed to pay originally....are the new American Heroes whose Treasury-looting must be defended at all costs.
Somehow, I guess, that all makes sense.
