How can it be? How in the hell can a president with a roughly 28% approval rating and a disapproval rating just one shy of Nixon's lowest rating ever PRESSURE a Democratic Congressional majority in both houses to drop to their knees and grant this brush clearer from Texas EVEN MORE COMMANDER GUY POWERS??
For the last couple of months this 28% White House has stood defiantly together as one with the same message to subpoena serving Democrats as The Dick had for Senator Patrick Leahy(D-VT) a while back....."go f*ck yourself".
Alberto Gonzales smirked and lied and couldn't recall anything about anything important. That's what Alberto does, of course, because he's,
Yet what happened in the wee hours Friday and Saturday night in the House and the Senate? In the Senate 16 Democratic senators, in the House 41 Democratic representatives joined with Bush Rubber Stampers to give, arguably, the worst president in American history even more power to spy on Americans without oversight as the 4th Amendment to the Constitution clearly forbids.
Even though the majority of these Democrats have no clue about what surveillance activities have been, and are still being, carried out by this administration, even though Bush has created more extremists, not less, by his deceitful pre-emptive war of choice against a nation that posed no threat to the U.S., even though American voters resoundingly rejected GOP rule last November and by a 2-1 margin in most every poll taken reject Bush's foreign policy leadership and the way he's conducting the scam known as "the global war on terror".
Even knowing all of this, the non-stop scare tactics and "gut feelings" and completely bogus stories about "dry runs" has apparently worked again to scare these Democratic bunnies into voting to give one of the most disliked and untrusted president's in history even more executive branch powers for him to abuse.
One FOX "news" recycler says this about the weekend cave-in by Democrats.....
Congressional Democrats won a few concessions in negotiations earlier in the week. New wiretaps must be approved by the director of national intelligence and the attorney general, not just the attorney general. Congress has battled with Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on several issues, and some Democrats have accused him of perjury.
The new law also will expire in six months unless Congress renews it. The administration wanted the changes to be permanent.
Many congressional Democrats wanted tighter restrictions on government surveillance, but yielded in the face of Bush's veto threats and the impending August recess. Link
Well, hell, what am I worried about? Now we will have two Bush cult followers from the executive branch "approving" those illegal-eavesdropping-on-America capers. The entire checks and balances "thing" is supposed to include, you know, checks and balcances. Not simply one branch of government unilaterally violating the 4th amendment without any other branch having oversight.
But alas, those 16 Dem senators and those 41 Dem representatives were shake, shake, shaking in their bunny suits that 28% Commander Guy would (gasp!) veto any measure that actually retained any accountability from the White House. Oh, please not the veto pen.....not that.
And finally, how could the "impending August recess" make these weak knee-ers "yield" to Bush? How does logic like this work?
These Dems will go home and tell their constituencies that in spite of Bush's 28% approval rating, in spite of reports demonstrating al-Qaeda is stronger rather than weaker as a result of the Iraq crime turned quagmire, in spite of the fact that this White House has demonstrated repeatedly that they cannot be trusted to tell the truth about what they have done or what they are doing.....ever.....the Dems voted FOR more of the same.
All I can say is good luck with that.
