About This Blog
In commenting on my post from Saturday, "Why Did Benedict Resign?", my blog bud, King, asked a few good questions.....
Rev, I've noticed that when you feel compelled to display a religion's warts, it is invariably the Catholic religion you attack. Is there any particular reason this is so ? Many Christian and non-Christian religions proscribe homosexuality. Some even advocate executing homosexuals (Islam), yet you don't attack them. It's always the Catholics. What's up ? Do you think Catholics vote Republican, or what ?
Those are honest questions.....
My most concise answer would be that Catholicism is the world's oldest and largest Christian sect. Inside the U.S., Catholic Christians make up 24% of the nation's population.
While it is true that membership in Protestant denominations, if combined, would make up 51% of all adults.........not one specific denomination out ranks Catholicism in membership. Point being that Catholicism has quite a bit of influence on Americans.
The same can not be said about Islam inside America. Muslims make up .6% of the American population. That's point six percent. Even before 9-11, Islam had little influence inside the U.S. Even less now.
And no, I don't think Catholics vote for Republicans because overall....they don't. And, my criticism of Catholicism is never criticism directed at members, but instead, the Church's leadership. There are two reasons for this.
1) "Many Christian and non-Christian religions proscribe homosexuality. Some even advocate executing homosexuals (Islam), yet you don't attack them. It's always the Catholics. What's up ?"
Original sin. That's what's up. Catholicism has never abandoned, let alone reformed, their superstitious take on human sexuality.....that the human drive and desire for sexual intercourse, per se, is sinful in itself. The Church believes and teaches that when Eve tempted Adam it was to seduce him into committing sin....having sex. Because of Adam and Eve's 'weakness', the Church teaches, all flesh born is hopelessly evil, doomed to burn in eternal hell fire.
The Church created a solution for original sin with the sacraments, marriage being one of those sacraments. Though humans are still miserable wretches consumed by their "worldly' desire to....have sex......that wretchedness can be 'cleansed' within the Church-sponsored sacrament of marriage.
It is my opinion.....and history supports my opinion....that the Church's very primitive doctrine of original sin as it informs human sexuality has led directly to the disgraceful Church scandals of history, and more importantly, the scandals of recent decades.
2) Catholic leaders are very often deferred to in the United States. Federally elected officials most often defer to these leaders as human vessels of divine morality. Just consider....
In a period when monthly revelations describe a Church whose leaders covered up for child molesting priests in a cold and calculating way over several decades in multiple countries.....these same leaders are treated as serious and morally worthy of being deferred to when they object to insurance plans which include access to contraception.
The obvious contradictions are simply unbearable, at least to me.
What should actually happen to the Catholic Church in America...in light of the epidemic of child rape perpetrated by Catholic leaders and then covered-up by higher leaders, apparently including Benedict, over multiple decades and inside multiple countries ......is that the Church should be charged under the RICO Act as organized crime and tried and convicted accordingly.
If any other group or organization were found to have done what Cardinals, Bishops and Priests have done.....do you believe for one minute that that group would not be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law....assets confiscated, accomplices after the fact jailed?
This failure to confront obvious evil inside our country is a national disgrace.
I don't care how many front pages across America report oh-so-in-awe of the alleged moral virtue in a resigning pope and the 'holy' process to come in choosing his successor.....the facts are that Benedict, some Cardinals, some Bishops and many Priests are up to their eyeballs in evil.
Deferring to these folks for moral guidance or values would be like deferring to Charles Manson for heart surgery procedures.
