Matt Lauer......Villager

By The Reverend Published: March 31, 2010

Matt Lauer is a mild-mannered, seemingly non-threatening, daytime teevee host. Lauer is not a political news person.....even if he plays one in his role on NBC.

My beef with the Matt Lauer teevee types is that they always seem to make themselves part of whatever story that's being "reported." But that's a personal pet peeve of mine....so let's move on.

Onward Christian Soldiers

"Onward Christian soldiers, marching as to war." That's how the aberrational Christian hymn goes.

Surprisingly, the evils perpetrated on children by numerous priests, and now a culpable Pope Benedict Ratzinger....has actually made front page news. It's about time.

Too Funny

By The Reverend Published: March 26, 2010

I haven't launched into a rant meltdown for quite awhile. I've been purposely trying to guard against any, you know, unSerious ramblings that are bountifully sprinkled with offensive and dreadful curse words.

Today, however, I just cannot refrain from sharing this belly-buster with everyone. When I saw this last night....seriously....I laughed out loud, several times. Congressman Harry Mitchell (D-AZ) wins the prize for receiving the craziest phone message in response to his health care vote. Starting at the 58 second mark.....

The pathetic Sarah Palin tells her clueless Twitter followers to "reload", directing their attention to her FaceBook page where this map, complete with rifle scope crosshair targets mark the districts of Democratic representatives who voted for health care reform. Staying classy? You betcha'.

GOP Waterloo

David Frum is a former economic speechwriter for George W. Bush. Frum is often seen on Fox's alleged-news programs. He always seemed to me to be a rather odd duck....but I never held that against him. It was always his nonsensical conservative cheerleading that turned me off.

But it seems that Frum has not completely lost his mind.....and that is a minor miracle after spending all that time around Fox-bots.

Bill Passage Afterglow

By The Reverend Published: March 23, 2010

*With this post today, The Reverend will have published his 1000th blog post here at the Blog of Mass Destruction. Thanks go out to Ohio.com for giving me the opportunity 2 1/2 years ago....and to all who read and comment here.

The health care reform legislation has passed. President Obama, whose primary domestic campaign promise in 2008 was comprehensive national health care reform, will sign the bill into law today.

Pathetic GOP Nullification Attempts

By The Reverend Published: March 19, 2010

It's anybody's guess whether a comprehensive health reform bill will pass this weekend. As of this morning, Speaker Pelosi still does not have the magic number of 216 votes. While I can't see the health reform bill failing at this juncture......I can't dismiss the possibility that it will.

Assuming the health care reform bill passes......let's look at what anti-health-insurance-for-all-Americans Republicans will be doing to counter it's passage.

Why Republicans Are Acting So Crazy

By The Reverend Published: March 17, 2010

Republicans have, basically, ruled Washington since 1994. Sixteen straight years of Republican rule is quite a long time. A sense of entitlement develops. Corporate whore media, at least since the time of President Clinton, has been feeding that Republican sense of entitlement.....constantly, and wrongly, repeating that the progressive United States of America is a conservative nation, a center-right nation, best represented by the "conservative" political party.

After Obama's inauguration, I wrote that the theme of corporate whore media had become, "the minority should rule." Deference should still be paid to Republicans, even though they had taken a severe electoral beating in 2006 and in 2008, which resulted in a 60-40%, Democrat-to-Republican congressional makeup.

A Tea Party Divided

By The Reverend Published: March 16, 2010

I've had some fun with the Tea Party.....phenomenon, crazies, movement, astroturf, racist reactionaries....whatever you want to call it.

But can a Tea Party divided .....successfully brew Tea? If some Partiers don't want others to join the...Party.....because they aren't Partying hearty enough...or have the wrong Party costumes....or are not sufficiently supportive of the old way of Partying....you know, the Grand Old Party....won't the Partiers simply be dismissed by voters like they would a used Tea Bag?

Texas Flood Of Ignorance

By The Reverend Published: March 13, 2010

The late Stevie Ray Vaughan wrote and recorded a great slow blues entitled "Texas Flood." The lyrics tell about a hypothetical flood down in Texas when "all the telephone lines are down" and poor Stevie Ray is distraught because he can't find his main squeeze. Good stuff.

There's a flood going on in the state of Texas right now. Not a literal flood of water, but a flood of post-modern, conservative Christianist propaganda. The source of the flood is the Texas Board of Education....

Village People

Congressional representatives are usually careful when they talk about the national media. If elected officials complain too loudly about the state of our corrupt, corporate media....then they face the prospects of being constantly pilloried by that same corrupt, corporate media....whether they deserve it or not. That's why it was refreshing to see this coming from Patrick Kennedy (D-RI) yesterday....

Miscarriages Illegal In Utah

By The Reverend Published: March 8, 2010

It is yet to be seen whether hyper, anti-choicer, Bart Stupak (D-MI), will single handedly derail the Democratic health reform plan by rallying his

Bart Stupak tells Americans, falsely, that the health reform bill, as passed in the Senate, permits tax dollars to be spent for abortion. That is not true. The Senate bill goes to great pains to spell out how even poorer families who receive government subsidies in the new program, and who want to purchase coverage for abortion and/or reproductive services, can do so only by paying for the reproductive service portion of the insurance plan with their own money. Democratic Senator, Ben Nelson (D-NE), made sure that the Senate version of the bill included segregated and tedious accounting of government subsidies and purchaser amounts.....to guarantee no tax dollars were used to purchase the reproductive services portion of the insurance....while still making it possible for insurance companies in the exchanges to offer reproductive services.

Bunning Hypocrisy Resolved

By The Reverend Published: March 3, 2010

I don't have much time today....but it's important for me to complete the circle on the Senator Jim Bunning (R-Lunatic-KY) story. At the urging of other Republicans, Bunning finally relented, withdrawing his hold on emergency unemployment, COBRA, construction funding and Medicare doctor reimbursement......but not until he forced a vote on an amendment, which failed.

For two nights in a row, I watched Chris Matthews of MSNBC argue in support of Bunning's position. To Matthews, Bunning's monumental hypocrisy doesn't, in any way, negate his argument that Congress must pay for all legislation passed, even emergency unemployment extensions.

Cowardly, Bullying, Hypocrites

By The Reverend Published: March 2, 2010

Yesterday, I wrote about the effort by some state conservatives to pass nullification legislation, in essence, to stop elected officials from implementing federal policies they don't like....like comprehensive health care reform.

The U.S. Senate already has a 'nullification' rule, of sorts. It allows for any ONE senator, for any reason, or none at all, to 'nullify', put a hold on, pending legislation. At least, for a while....
