The backpack in the picture above was found Monday along a scheduled MLK Day parade route in Seattle. Inside.....well...let the FBI explain what was inside...
FBI agent Frank Harrill described the "improvised explosive device" as having a "very lethal design" capable of inflicting "multiple casualties."
Agent Harrill said that there was no question that the backpack bomb was part of a domestic terrorism plot.
And just like with many terrorist bombs in Iraq and Afghanistan......
The bomb had a remote detonator and the ability to cause mass casualties, according to an official familiar with the case who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release information about the investigation.
The "very lethal" backpack bomb with remote detonation capabilities was placed along the scheduled MLK Day parade route, Monday.....in Seattle....U.S.A. The backpack was placed where it was placed along the scheduled parade route to maximize casualties.....
The bomb was carefully placed on a metal bench with a brick wall behind that would have directed shrapnel toward Main Street, where marchers were expected to pass, investigators said.
Fortunately, the backpack....
.....was discovered on a downtown bench by three city workers who notified police of the device about 30 minutes before the parade was scheduled to begin.
The parade, attended by about 1,500 people, was quickly rerouted while city's bomb disposal unit was summoned and safely "neutralized the device," the FBI said.
A stroke of luck.....three city workers found the backpack a half hour before the MLK parade was to begin.....is the only thing keeping us from talking today about yet another domestic terrorist attack.
A domestic terrorist attack which would have looked like this....
Al Odenthal used to run the bomb squad in Spokane. His expertise in explosives gives insight to what was in the backpack.
"This would destroy cars, knock out windows for more than a block and structural damage to building with its facility," said Odenthal.
This domestic terrorism attempt was the real deal. Unlike, say, the alleged NY Times "bomber", Faisal Shahzad, who used fireworks and a propane tank......the Seattle MLK Day terrorist attempt was sophisticated, an authentic I.E.D. with a remote detonator.
As Rachel Maddow pointed out last night, however.....how much attention has this domestic terrorism attempt received from national teevee media?
Has the Seattle MLK Day parade terrorist attempt been handled by corporate media the same way they handled the "underwear" bomber story, or the NY Times bomber story or any other linked-to-Muslims terrorist stories?
Why do you think that's the case?
Why aren't corporate media types asking all the leading questions about this Seattle story which they normally ask when Muslims are suspected? Why haven't we seen the 24/7 "Breaking News" teevee border scrolling endlessly about the Seattle terrorist attempt?
The Seattle terrorist attempt, obviously sophisticated and extremely dangerous, was uncovered along the parade route scheduled for the celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The terrorist was trying to kill and injure participants in that celebration. Therefore, it is highly likely that racism is involved. The really ugly and violent kind of racism....the white supremacist kind.
Seattle has had it's problems over the years with white supremacist groups.
But that doesn't explain why corporate media has not featured this Seattle domestic terrorist attack story all week long. As you know, corporate media latches on to a particular story.....whether the story has broad implications, or inherent danger, or not.....and then proceeds to drown us in their repetitions of that story.
Not this time. Not with this Seattle, MLK Day terrorist attack.
Could it be that corporate media isn't particularly interested in this story, as shocking and as serious as it is, because the story is dripping with white supremacy implications? Racial hatred of blacks by violent minded whites?
To expand .....consider, let's say there's a Ronald Reagan Day parade in California. Just 30 minutes before the Ronald Reagan Day parade is to start, city workers find what is later described as an "improvised explosive device" having a "very lethal design" capable of inflicting "multiple casualties" and so sophisticated that it could be detonated from a remote device.....cell phone, radio frequency, etc. The bomb was found to have been placed along the Reagan Day parade route to maximize the destruction, injury and death.
What would be corporate media's reaction, and subsequent coverage....if such a hypothetical were to occur? Wouldn't every name brand anchor in corporate teevee be rushing to the scene in order to report "live" from the site of such a terrible, terrible attack on conservatives, Reagan lovers, Republicans? Wouldn't every face with an opinion be asked what they thought had caused such a dreadful attempt on a day meant to celebrate modern conservatism's Father figure?
Then why the muted response by corporate media to this Seattle story?
