Dots That Don't Connect

By The Reverend Published: June 10, 2013

On June 2nd, House Oversight Committee Chairman, Darrell Issa (R-CA), demonstrated why his investigation and hearings into an alleged IRS scandal are not on the level...

“The whole transcript will be put out. We understand - these are in real time. And the administration is still - their paid liar, their spokesperson, picture behind, he's still making up things about what happens in calling this local rogue. There's no indication - the reason that Lois Lerner tried to take the Fifth... is not because there’s a rogue in Cincinnati, it’s because this is a problem that was coordinated in all likelihood right out of Washington headquarters And we’re getting to proving it."

“The administration is still trying to say there’s a few rogue agents in Cincinnati, when in fact the indication is they were directly being ordered from Washington,” he said.

Notice the weasel-words. "in all likelihood", "we're getting to prove it", "the indication is." I have no idea what "we're getting to prove it" could even mean. Issa had no evidence connecting the Obama White House to IRS sorting and filing practices in the tax-exempt division in Cincinnati....and so he made it sound like the White House was involved.

Notice also that Issa was referring to a "transcript". The transcript had not yet been made public but Issa interpreted it on teevee anyway. Issa's selective transcript release of interviews with IRS employees is found here.

But yesterday, Elijah Cummings(D-MD) punched back at Issa's weasely ways....

Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., released a partial transcript of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform interview with the unnamed manager in the IRS’ Cincinnati office. In it, the employee said the extra scrutiny for tea party groups’ tax exempt status was an effort to be consistent in reviewing applications and not driven by politics.

"an effort to be consistent in reviewing applications and not driven by politics." Hundreds of new Tea groups, whether out of ignorance or calculation, applied for 501 c4 tax-exempt status as "social welfare" community organizations after the 2010 midterm, when these Tea groups were actually purely political advocacy groups undeserving of c4 status from the IRS. And no, the protocol for "reviewing applications" didn't come from the White House.....

A self-described conservative Republican who is a manager in the Internal Revenue Service office that targeted tea party groups told investigators that he, not the White House, set in motion the review.....

“He is a conservative Republican working for the IRS. I think this interview and these statements go a long way to showing that the White House was not involved in this,” Cummings said.

Here is a key point....

In the five-hour interview conducted last week, the manager said one of his employees brought to him a tea party group’s application for tax exempt status. The manager said he recognized the political implications of the decision and flagged it for an office in Washington. Some Republicans have suggested that the Washington office initiated the close examination.

But Washington did not initiate the close examination. A lifelong conservative Republican IRS manager (rightly) did.

I'm not so foolish to think that any of this will make a difference. Issa is a partisan scoundrel who has made it his fetish to beat dead horses. Fast and Furious, and Benghazi "investigative" hearings are two glaring examples of ugly, misleading and brazenly partisan political withhunting led by Darrell Issa.

But it is as if Issa can't help himself......and some addictions are like that. No doubt Darrell Issa will keep beating the IRS dead-horse even though the horse is.....dead, because Issa doesn't know how to do anything else.

One last point. One of Issa's paths of attack in his partisan witchhunt over the IRS has been the wasteful spending of the IRS at training seminars, etc.  Well, here's Darrell Issa back in October 2010 explaining what he had in mind for the 112th Congress....

...he said he wanted to hold “seven hearings a week times 40 weeks.” It was clearly his intention to obstruct President Obama, who he called “one of the most corrupt presidents in modern times,” by any means at his disposal.

280 hearings per year, just in the House Oversight Committee, and just for the partisan political purpose of smearing or publicly degrading a Democratic president.....seems an awful lot like "wasteful spending" to me.
