While I do not underestimate the KGB-mindedness of Vlad Putin, I have found the responses to Putin's Crimea Caper by our political leaders and feckless corporate media nauseating and reprehensible.
The apparent lack of self-awareness by our "spokespeople" is so embarrassing and worthy of ridicule that it's difficult for me to not be ashamed of being an American. Not impossible, but difficult.
Simply consider: 11 years ago the U.S. military traveled thousands of miles away from our nation's borders to attack a sovereign nation which posed no threat to us. The official justification has since been exposed as fraudulent. Tens of thousands of human beings were slaughtered including 4500 U.S. soldiers with tens of thousands more brutally wounded. Nothing was gained from the attack and slaughter and Iraq stands as a totally broken nation today. As a gesture of our world dominance, the U.S. had our largest embassy in the world constructed in Iraq where still today 30,000 "security personnel" protect those who "work" there.
Compare that "freedom spreading" action by exceptional America to what Vlad Putin has recently ordered. Putin recognized the political unrest in the neighboring country of Ukraine where a coup had taken place and sent troops into Crimea in a pre-emptive move to protect Russian defense installations there. As of today, Putin's soldiers haven't killed or slaughtered anyone.
Which action is more outrageous, more unacceptable, more worthy of world criticism and rebuke? Which action seems more like the work of a rogue country? Which decision appears more like the decision of a dictator-led country?
Yes, as one commentator stated yesterday, two wrongs don't make a right. Just because the U.S. acted like Hitler's bunch when it came to Iraq doesn't justify Putin's gesture of strength in Crimea. That is correct.....but for crying out loud....shouldn't America's now-obvious crime in devastating an entire country, and for no good or apparent reason, give American leaders and "journalists" cause to think, talk and write with a bit more humility and self-awareness?
Apparently not. I attribute that phenomenon to American versions of narcissistic exceptionalism.....in other words, our nations leaders and "journalists" find it almost impossible to acknowledge the faults, let alone crimes, of the worlds lone superpower.
So in that spirit, here's a little something to help deflate that inflated national ego.....here's something you can bring up with your "U.S.A., U.S.A., U.S.A." friends and family members. Here's something to park in the "freedom" file.
Remember Occupy Wall Street? Occupy was a grassroots, messy national protest movement drawing attention to the evil activities and practices of Wall Street banksters. Establishment types in politics and media, the same folks who celebrated the "new" Tea Party movement from it's inception, hated Occupy and did everything in their power to demean, ridicule and lambast those doing the protesting.
Eventually, Homeland Security representatives worked with local police departments and others to shut down Occupy, even though Occupy protesters, at least on legal paper, had the perfect democratic right to continue. Occupy represented a threat to the 1% who rule us through their purchasing of our government....and anything that threatens our 1% rulers cannot be allowed to stand.
Here's Dave Lindorff with the set up...."in early October (2011) the movement came to Houston, Texas. Law enforcement officials and the city's banking and oil executives freaked out.....The push back took the form of violent assaults by police on Occupy activists, federal and local surveillance of people seen as organizers, infiltration by police provocateurs,...and as crazy as it sounds....some kind of plot to assassinate the "leaders" of this non-violent and leaderless movement."
Crazy talk? Wild-eyed rhetoric from some commie who hates America? Or the truth?
Here is a memo obtained from the Houston FBI....
An identified [DELETED] as of October planned to enage in sniper attacks against protesters in Houston, Texas if deemed necessary. An identified [DELETED] had received intelligence that indicated the protesters in New York and Seattle planned similar protests in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and Austin, Texas. [DELETED] planned to gather intelligence against the leaders of the protest groups and photographs, then formulate a plan to kill the leadership via suppressed sniper rifles.
WhoWhatWhy contacted FBI headquarters in Washington and asked about this document....which despite it's stunning revelation and despite PCFJ press releases, was ignored by mainstream and "alternative" press alike.
The agency confirmed that it is genuine and that it originated in the Houston FBI office.
Tell me, are you feeling exceptional right now....or outraged?
