About This Blog
For 6 of the last 7 years, Republicans have had the majority in Congress and held the office of the presidency. During this time majority Republicans were not shy about running Washington with an iron fist. Making sure that Democrats played little, if any, role in authoring legislation.
The president, up until the past couple of weeks, has not vetoed ANY funding bills. His veto of the stem cell research bill was not because of the money, it was because of the "ethics". His veto of the Iraq supplemental was not because of the money, but because of the fictitious "unitary executive" challenge to the CinC that Democrats included.
Republicans, in the majority for 6 of the last 7 years in Congress and holding the presidency..Republicans, who have promised a zillion times that THEY are the party of fiscal responsibility and that the Democrats are the ones who are irresponsible with America's tax dollars. Republicans, who, still to this day, use the phrase "tax and spend" Democrats to describe their counterparts have left us with this.....
According to the Treasury Department, from 1776-2000, the first 224 years of U.S. history, 42 U.S. presidents borrowed a combined $1.01 trillion from foreign governments and financial institutions, but in the past four years alone, the Bush administration borrowed $1.05 trillion. Link
Those national debt numbers are the results of Republicans' governance while in the majority. It isn't just that Republican rule led to an unnoteworthy distinction in national debt results compared to Democratic majority rule. Oh, no. It isn't that Republicans came close to the historical fiscal conservancy numbers compared to historic Democratic rule.
Think about it. During just the past 4 years, Republican rule has led to an increase in the national debt, an increase so large, it surpasses ALL previous debts in American history, COMBINED!!
That is the result of Republicans having the presidency and a Congressional majority for just a handful of years.
If that is fiscal responsibility.....I'm Pope Benedict.
This is noteworthy for this reason: A general election is 12 months away. Republicans, ALREADY, are mouthing the words, AGAIN, that the Republican Party is the party of fiscal conservancy. Obviously, unless you are a wingnut pod-person, this is all laughable in a sick, twisted way.
The Republican Party, as the last 4 years have clearly demonstrated, wouldn't know how to govern America's finances responsibly, it seems, if there were guns held to their heads.
Why is this? Are Republicans simply crazed fiends bent on destroying America?
On the contrary, I believe, this record debt run up by Republicans is strategic, premeditated. It WAS their fiscal plan all along.
Republicans have become such a demented political party that they are purposely bankrupting America in the hopes of destroying, eventually, popular domestic programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, among many others.
Why would they do that? Because those programs are progressive programs. Progressive programs historically originate and are implemented by the Democratic Party. By destroying these social programs, because we simply can't afford them with national debt numbers so high(wink, wink), the GOP hopes they can dramatically cut into support for their political opponents.
It's the same reason why Republicans seek to dismantle the public education system in America. It's the same reason why Republicans have no qualms about pouring trillions down the toilet in foreign wars of choice. It's the same reason why one third plus one plus Decider vetoed the S-CHIP bill. It's the same reason Republicans, in general, refuse to acknowledge mankind's part in global warming....a cause Democrat Al Gore champions.
The Bush/Rove brand of Republicanism has only one goal. Defeat the enemy. Their enemies are not al-Qaeda or rogue dictators in far-away lands. Their enemies are Democrats. Everything must be sacrificed in the Republican Party's war against their Democratic enemies.
Even America itself.
