Yesterday, many Village Elders and Elder-ettes nearly collapsed from shock....perhaps due to their unusually hyperactive clutching of their pearls or wringing of their hands. You see, Important people, like Joe Scarborough, Mika Brezinski, Willie Giest, Martha MaCallum, Mike Barnicle, etc.....are the self-appointed room mothers of Villagedom. These Very Important People in Media were shocked at the rudeness of the Democratic president's partisan words on the very day that people were gunned down in yet another mass gun killing spree.
Morning Blow, himself...
"On the day while people were hiding, while people were bleeding, while people were dying, while the nation was locked in on this, he's talking about harsh partisanship," Scarborough said.
Village People set the rules of acceptable and proper etiquette for federal officials. It's their job, self-appointed or not. Villagers, alone, know when a Democratic president should speak partisanly and when he shouldn't. According to Village consensus yesterday, President Obama should have cancelled his regularly scheduled speech because thirteen people were killed in yet another mass murder by gun.
How could Obama be so heartless? Why-oh-why didn't the hapless Jay Carney....or the president himself, have enough decency or common sense to postpone planned remarks to allow for enough Village-approved wallowing time over the slaughter of 13 more Americans?
Style is so important to the Village. Substance? Not so much.
There have been 17 mass shootings, involving four victims or more, since the Newtown slaughter of first graders in Connecticut. I don't recall a Village Etiquette Meltdown after any of those 17 mass killings by gun.
Nor did I witness a mass Village censorship-of-the-president or worrywart rally at any time that this statistic was being added up ....
At least 40 children ages 12 and under have died in accidental shootings since the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre.
But after the Navy Yard shooting there weren't enough wammbulances or enough smelling salts to handle the deeply-felt grief and worry the Village was feeling over the partisan words of an uncaring, unfeeling and cold-hearted President Obama.
Pardon my cynicism.....but the Village's 19th Nervous Breakdown over Obama not rescheduling his "inappropriate" partisan speech doesn't pass the smell test.
Here's the portion of Obama's speech that Goldilocks Villagers (partisanship is either cold or hot, only Village People have it just right) almost passed out listening to....
I cannot remember a time when one faction of one party promises economic chaos if it can’t get 100 percent of what it wants. That’s never happened before. But that’s what’s happening right now.
You have some Republicans in the House of Representatives who are promising to shut down the government at the end of this month if they can’t shut down the Affordable Care Act. And if that scheme doesn’t work, some have suggested they won’t pay the very bills that Congress has already run up, which would cause America to default on its debt for the first time in our history and would create massive economic turmoil, interest rates on ordinary people would shoot up.
The unvarnished truth is.....speaking truth so clearly, as Obama did in his words about planned Republican treachery, is not welcomed in the Village. In fact....speaking truth clearly is offensive to Village media. Some refer to it as "uncivil."
Over these last dozen years or so, it has become more and more evident that the Republican Party was morphing itself into an enemy of America and Americans. Village media, though, being the unique Goldilocks that they are, have refused over that time to explain just how dangerous and destructive Republicans have become. Why? Because when you're Goldilocks....you just KNOW that both sides are too hot or too cold.
So, Obama's words of truth about what it is that Republicans are doing to shut down the government, default on our national debt and send our national economy into a death spiral.....are not welcomed in the Village.
A president's job is to look into the political mirror of national and international events and respond to those events in the best interests of the American people.
The job of the Villagers is to look into the political mirror of those same events and respond by telling us how they look in that mirror.
