Making A Mockery Of Double Standards

By The Reverend Published: February 28, 2014

Critics of President Obama have been relentless these past five years. That relentlessness, though sometimes I don't like to admit it, is a tribute to America's freedom of speech. During the Cheney administration, I and many others were relentless in our daily criticism of President Cheney and his tagalong companion George W. Bush. In the 90's, the corporate/centrist President Bill Clinton was critically attacked by his political opponents each and every day of his presidency. The same will happen to the next president.

However, what distinguishes critics of Democratic presidents, in my not-very-humble opinion, is the obvious double standard applied by these conservative critics of Democratic presidents. There are so many examples to choose from to make my case, but for this post, I'll focus on only one glaring example.

Arizona Update......Plus New Obamacare Numbers

By The Reverend Published: February 27, 2014

* Followup: Yesterday, Arizona Republican Governor Jan Brewer did veto the Republican-controlled legislature's open discrimination of gays bill. Brewer deserves credit for doing the right thing.

So it looks like GOP-state gay bashing laws are mostly unacceptable....even to Republicans....and, anyway, FYI.....cultural conservatives lost their fight to keep gays unequal when the Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act back in June of last year.

Ten years ago this month, the sitting president of the United States, George W. Bush, called publicly for a constitutional amendment preventing gay Americans from ever obtaining the right to legally marry. So....progress.

Deja Voodoo....Again

By The Reverend Published: February 26, 2014

Following up on yesterday's ruminations over Ohio Governor John Kasich's addiction to the proven-failure of supply-side economics, aka "voodoo economics" seems that GOP Rep. Dave Camp (R-MI) will today introduce a "tax reform" bill in the House.

The bill has no chance of going anywhere in 2014 because Republicans have already made clear that they aren't doing distract away from what they consider to be their winning secret-decoder ring midterms formula of exclusively bashing Obamacare leading up to November. But the new Camp "tax reform" bill provides yet another insight into the one-trick-pony mind of those representing today's Republican Party.

Kasich: Doubling Down On Trickle-Down

By The Reverend Published: February 25, 2014

How has Ohio been doing since Republican John Kasich took over in Columbus? 2013, Ohio’s unemployment rate rose from 6.7 percent to 7.2 percent — higher than the national rate of 6.6 percent and the highest year-to-year increase in the U.S. Nearly 31,000 people were added to the unemployment rolls.

Establishing Religion In Arizona

By The Reverend Published: February 23, 2014

As the bloody-red conservative state of Kansas came to their senses and nixed legislation intended to give the religiously pious in their state legal cover to openly discriminate against gay citizens.......Arizona's governor defended her state's shiny new legislation to legalize discriminatory behavior directed citizens.....

The bill, which the (Arizona) state House of Representatives passed by a 33-27 vote Thursday, now goes to Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican and onetime small business owner who vetoed similar legislation last year but has expressed the right of business owners to deny service.

California Dreaming

By The Reverend Published: February 22, 2014

Venture capitalist Tim Draper's effort to divide the state of California into 6....count 'em....6 individual states has until July 18th to gather 807,000+ petition signatures. If the necessary signatures are gathered in time, voters in California may be voting to fragment their state this November or November 2016.

California’s Secretary of State, Debra Bowen, announced this week that Mr Draper could start collecting voters’ signatures to support his ballot initiative.

GOP: Seniors Should Pay More, Have Fewer Choices

By The Reverend Published: February 21, 2014

I see that Akron General Hospital invited Laura Ingraham as keynote speaker for their 100th anniversary shindig. Paying Ingraham to talk about health care is like paying Rush Limbaugh to talk about the sacredness of marriage to a group of marriage-counseling professionals....but hey, freedom, right?

The GOP has decided to clear the deck of all things not related to bashing Obamacare in their one-trick-pony plan to gain more congressional power this November. Talk radio hater Ingraham fits right into that plan.....and Akron General officials, apparently, are playing along with the GOP's plan. That's too bad. Ingraham is one of the worst far-right propagandists out there.

Stomping Cockroaches

By The Reverend Published: February 20, 2014

Beginning on April 6, 1994, Hutus began slaughtering the Tutsis in the African country of Rwanda. As the brutal killings continued, the world stood idly by and just watched the slaughter. Lasting 100 days, the Rwanda genocide left approximately 800,000 Tutsis and Hutu sympathizers dead.

When RTLM (Radio Télévison des Milles Collines) began broadcasting on July 8, 1993, it also spread hate.....

Some Bruising Allowed

By The Reverend Published: February 19, 2014

I heard some of this on the radio yesterday morning. I can't figure out what the hell has gone wrong in Kansas but suggesting new laws which allow parents (and others) to physically abuse children even if it causes "some bruising" ain't gonna' solve whatever frustration Kansans are experiencing.

House Bill 2699, which was introduced by Rep. Gail Finney, exempts corporal punishment by a parent from the definitions of child abuse, endangering a child, battery and domestic battery.

Corporal punishment is defined under the bill as using one’s palm to strike the clothed buttocks of child up to 10 times and using reasonable physical force to restrain the child. The bill acknowledges that this may lead to bruising.

Woke up to about 12 inches of snow in the driveway. Had to unleash the SnowKrackenBlower before having coffee. Quite a wakeup.

Anyway.....I guess it was 'resurrect-the-Obama-2009-stimulus-for-another-round-of-fact-free-bashing' day yesterday for Republicans and fascists on the radio pretending to be conservatives.

Standing Your Killing Ground

By The Reverend Published: February 17, 2014

I have always contended that the "stand your ground" laws that have been passed in a number of states are, in practice, nothing but legalized murder laws. While overall violent crime rates are down, states with "stand your ground" laws have seen a 7% increase in murders....

Whatever the merits of "Stand Your Ground" laws, they appear to increase homicides by at least 7%, reports NPR. It cites a Texas A&M study of the 23 states that have enacted "Stand Your Ground" laws since 2005. Researchers looked at the homicide rate in those states pre- and post-law, as well as the rates of non-Stand Your Ground states. It determined between 500 and 700 additional homicides take place annually as a result. "These laws lower the cost of using lethal force," says Mark Hoekstra, the economist behind the study. "Our study finds that, as a result, you get more of it. Homicides go up by 7% to 9% in states that pass the laws."

The Failure Of U.S. Capitalism

By The Reverend Published: February 15, 2014

I don't think I'm the only person in the country who believes modern U.S. capitalism has been an utter failure. U.S. capitalism over the last 40 years has helped gut the middle class and balloon the poverty class while simultaneously redistributing most income gains and "profits" to the top 1%. In this massive wealth and income transfer (redistribution) from the 99% to the 1%, government has been complicit.

Over the last decade, I've heard enough flowery claims from 1 percenters and their media servants about the virtually-divine, wonder-working power of capitalism to last me a lifetime. But the evidence shows, the proof demonstrates, that U.S. capitalism has only worked for wealthy Americans.

Expletive Deleted

By The Reverend Published: February 14, 2014

Often here on the blog I have pointed out decisions made and laws passed in mostly southern states that seem to point in the direction of a new Confederacy forming. Add to all those southern state decisions and laws the fact that the federal Congress can barely function because of deep and unresolvable red state-blue state polarization.....and a simpleton blogger like me comes away with the idea that...just maybe...the "united" part of these United States may be permanently threatened.

Yes, our democracy is messy, and loud, and sometimes very angry sounding....but I must say, I haven't seen anything quite like the last 10 years or so, at least since the 1960's. The divisions are palpable and pervasive. The contempt barely contained. The bitterness building.

Always Blaming The Victims

By The Reverend Published: February 12, 2014

My blog bud King, a bit rusty from his time away from his blog, put up a rant on Monday complaining about the American safety net, complete with some vague ramblings about a uniquely American "work ethic" which King accused Obama and the Democrats of discouraging.

Here's King doing his best Sean Hannity impersonation.....

Obama's Dictatorial Lawlessness

By The Reverend Published: February 10, 2014

We've come a long way from Obama's first inaugural. You might recall how on the night of Barack Obama's inauguration as our nation's first black president Republican leaders met to chart an obstructionistic course against his presidency. Here's a refresher....

....the guest list that night (which was just over 15 people in total) included Republican Reps. Eric Cantor (Va.), Kevin McCarthy (Calif.), Paul Ryan (Wis.), Pete Sessions (Texas), Jeb Hensarling (Texas), Pete Hoekstra (Mich.) and Dan Lungren (Calif.), along with Republican Sens. Jim DeMint (S.C.), Jon Kyl (Ariz.), Tom Coburn (Okla.), John Ensign (Nev.) and Bob Corker (Tenn.). The non-lawmakers present included Newt Gingrich, several years removed from his presidential campaign, and Frank Luntz, the long-time Republican wordsmith.

Teaching The Working Poor A Lesson

By The Reverend Published: February 8, 2014

Liberals are pointing out how vile the leaders of Republican-led states have proven themselves to be because of their refusal to expand Medicaid to poor workers in their states. I too have dabbled in this type of harsh criticism from time to time.

But maybe I've judged these self-proclaimed, patriot-state leaders too quickly. Perhaps state leaders who have opted out of Medicaid expansion for their poor working citizens.....have actually captured the high moral ground in the debate over why poor working people choose to remain....well...poor.

How To Properly Age A GOP Whine: IRS Vintage

By The Reverend Published: February 7, 2014

The reason the alleged IRS scandal never led to anything is because there was no IRS scandal. If you still believe that the IRS specifically and exclusively targeted conservative groups seeking 501(c)(4) tax exempt status in some self-victimizing, acid-trip-enhanced conspiracy by Obama and his socialist henchman to punish have been suckered big time.

Two months of investigation by Congress and the I.R.S. has produced new documents that have clouded much of the controversy’s narrative. In the more complicated picture now emerging, many organizations other than conservative groups were singled out: “progressive” organizations, medical marijuana purveyors, organizations formed to carry out President Obama’s health care law, and open source software developers who create software tools for computer code writers and distribute them free of charge.

The Most Religious States & The Poor They Mistreat

By The Reverend Published: February 5, 2014

You might have heard that Mississippi is the most religious state in the Union and Vermont is the least religious state, according to this recent Gallup poll. (Ohio is 25th)

What I found interesting, however, is that the top nineteen most religious states voted for Romney over Obama in 2012. Which suggests that the more religious a state's population is, the more that state's population aligns itself with the conservative Republican Party.....the nation's political party which most closely identifies itself with the interests of the rich few.

Girl Scout Cookies & Coke, The New National Threats

By The Reverend Published: February 4, 2014

How should a "real American" answer the door when a Girl Scout is making neighborhood rounds selling Girl Scout cookies? By pointing a gun at the Girl Scout.  Hopefully an isolated incident, but one never knows when the sale of Girl Scout cookies is being boycotted by Forced Pregnancy groups. Why boycott yummable Girl Scout cookies? Well, because those sly young girls are undercover agents working for the New Evil Incarnate, Planned Parenthood.

The pro-life movement has been concerned for a number of years about the ties between the Girl Scouts and the Planned Parenthood abortion business.

Of, By & For The Rich

By The Reverend Published: February 3, 2014

From it's founding, the United States was organized to make cynics out of the unwashed masses. Senators and representatives and presidents.....voted into office by the citizenry generation after generation....have always campaigned by telling potential voters that they, by god, will, if elected, carry out the will of the people.

Politicians of every stripe sing the hymns of the nearly-divine American democratic republic to get elected and then once elected, proceed to carry out the wishes of America's smallish investor class. It has always been so. It seems that it will always be so.

On the rare occasion when our nation's representatives have actually passed legislation of significance for the benefit of the electorate instead of only the rich and powerful few, it has been to head off some form of societal unrest or larger threat. The Civil Rights legislation of the 60's is but one example.

Often, to corral and break societal unrest, our elected officials have resorted to "patriotic" wars. These wars have always been touted as necessary to defend the people's freedom and liberty.....but in fact, have mostly been about expanding the economic sphere for the few in the investor class. This paradigm has defined our over two hundred year history.

Close To The End For Christie?

By The Reverend Published: February 1, 2014

In a letter released by his lawyer, the former official, David Wildstein, a high school friend of Mr. Christie's who was appointed with the governor's blessing at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which controls the bridge, described the order to close the lanes as "the Christie administration's order" and said "evidence exists as well tying Mr. Christie to having knowledge of the lane closures, during the period when the lanes were closed, contrary to what the governor stated publicly in a two-hour press conference" three weeks ago.

Immediately after reviewing the story of the George Washington Bridge being closed down for political punishment reasons by the Christie administration, I told Mrs. Reverend that the best thing the big governor could do was resign from his job as governor of New Jersey reasons. Stage a fake heart "event", complete with 9-11 calls and the whole nine yards, or something similar.
