Allow me to get this out first....
I have not seen American conservatives behave so overtly racially in quite some time. I was a teenager in the 60's and saw the many ugly teevee pictures and newspaper headlines when racist whites were trying to keep American blacks from being granted equal rights. It was ugly.
Thankfully, today's racism by conservative whites in America is nowhere near the tragic point it was in the 60's. We've made progress. Thanks to reality based Republicans and non-racist Democrats in the 1960's, equal and civil rights,...guaranteed from our founding in the Constitution,....were finally granted to black Americans.
But Republicans are no longer reality based....haven't been for over 15 years now. The Democratic Party is now the political party of equality, and the GOP is the political party that now only trumpets the so-called lost rights of majority whites in order to secure white votes for their candidates.
We're heading into a midterm election. America has a black president and a black attorney general......for the first time in it's history. Republicans want to regain Congress, or at the very least, the House. For that to happen, Republicans need white voters to turn out this November. So, Republicans have been resorting to their old "southern strategy" playbook of invigorating fear of blacks in white voters through race-baiting stories, most of the stories fraudulent, deceptive or flat out lies.
This 2010 GOP political dynamic has now entered a new phase with this story...
Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee have requested a hearing to investigate alleged racial bias within the Department of Justice, according to a letter sent Friday to committee chairman Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.).
The request came in relation to a voter intimidation case against the New Black Panther Party that was prosecuted in January 2009 as a civil action, then dismissed for two of the three defendants the following May. An injunction was issued for the last defendant.
House Judiciary Republicans also moved for further investigation on Thursday, urging President Obama in a letter to direct Attorney General Eric Holder to appoint a special prosecutor for the case.
“It is imperative that you [Leahy] schedule a hearing immediately so we can determine the validity of these claims and whether DOJ, as Mr. Adams testified, ‘abetted wrongdoers and abandoned law-abiding citizens,’ ” it concluded.
The Judiciary committee Republicans are Sens. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), and Tom Coburn (R-Okla.).
Media Matters has wiped the floor with these ridiculous complaints, complaints meant by Republicans to sufficiently hate-bait white voters.
The heart of the issue.....
•The Bush administration's Justice Department -- not the Obama administration -- made the decision not to pursue criminal charges against members of the New Black Panther Party for alleged voter intimidation at a polling center in Philadelphia in 2008;
After reviewing the matter, the Civil Rights Division determined that the facts did not constitute a prosecutable violation of the criminal statutes. The Department did, however, file a civil action on January 7th, 2009, seeking injunctive and declaratory relief under 11(b) against four defendants.
•The Obama administration successfully obtained default judgment against Samir Shabazz, a member of the New Black Panther Party carrying a nightstick outside the Philadelphia polling center on Election Day 2008;
About the detestable "Mr. Adams"....
•Adams is a long-time right-wing activist, who is known for filing an ethics complaint against Hugh Rodham that was subsequently dismissed, served as a Bush poll watcher in Florida 2004, and reportedly volunteered for a Republican group that trains lawyers to fight "racially tinged battles over voting rights";
•Adams has admitted that he does not have first-hand knowledge of the events, conversations, and decisions that he is citing to advance his accusations;
Republican Senators want Leahy's Senate committee to hold hearings....it's "imperative", they say....in order to find out whether or not Obama's Dept. of Justice "abetted wrongdoers and abandoned law-abiding citizens."
• No voters have come forward to claim that they were intimidated from voting on account of the New Black Panthers standing outside the polling center in 2008;
No "abetting wrongdoers"...no "abandon(ing) law abiding citizens"..... ..only white vote-baiting Republican Senators hoping to stir up some phony sh*t, just like Andrew Breitbart did last week, in the lead up to the November midterms.
That's all there is to this story.
