GOP To Prepare New Ransom Letter

By The Reverend Published: December 16, 2013

Quote of the weekend:

“We’re going to meet in our retreats after the holidays and discuss exactly what it is we’re going to try to get for this.”

That's from wonkboy Paul Ryan (R-WI) on Fox News Sunday. The context?.....

"We as a caucus -- along with our Senate counterparts -- are going to meet and discuss what it is we’re going to want out of the debt limit," Ryan said.

When Republicans forced a government shutdown in October, a shutdown that did damage to our national economy and GDP numbers, the eventual agreement to reopen included a smallish increase of the nation's debt limit. February 7, 2014 was the tentative date for the small extension to run out again.....giving those who would purposely do damage to our national economy leading up to the next election ample time to prepare their next ransom letter.

The Treasury Dept. informs that the nation's new debt limit may not be reached until late spring due to increased tax revenue from a slowly recovering national economy. But the Republicans Paul Ryan referred to yesterday will be meeting in their "retreats" after the holidays to plot their new kidnapping strategy, intent to use the debt ceiling (again) as leverage for even more austerity measures.

Let me remind here that it has been austerity measures (cutting government spending) which have prevented our economy from growing more robustly these last 4 years. Unlike any other recessionary period in modern times, the Junior Bush recession has convinced Republicans to study an already-bruised and bleeding economy and conclude that cutting government spending during a long period of low interest rates, low consumer deamnd and high unemployment was the responsible way forward.

Pull back the curtain on the GOP Oz, however, and you'll find that Republicans do not really care one whit about debt or deficits, never have, and are only demanding more cuts to slow or damage our frail economic recovery for political and electoral reasons. Democrats control the Senate and the White House.....Republicans want voters to reject those Democrats....and so the GOP plan is to damage the economy, then point to the economy they damaged....and blame it on Democrats who control two out of three branches of the legislative process.

Ryan: "(We) are going to meet and discuss what it is we’re going to want out of the debt limit."

Hey, the debt limit must be worth something, right? Perhaps another half point off 2014's GDP, perhaps more. Whatever amount of economic damage that can be exchanged for another increase in the debt limit.....is what Ryan and CO. are "going to want" out of any new ransom demands the GOP sends over to the Senate early next year.

Proving once again that the debt ceiling standoff of 2011, the government shutdown of 2013, and the coming ransom demands from Republicans in 2014 are all part of the same 'let's damage the economy' GOP playbook.

Ever wonder why conservatives, Republicans and the media Villagers who love them, seem to always embarrass themselves with their piddling whininess over even slightly improved unemployment numbers? Wonder no more. Republicans, tunnel-visioned in their quest to see a weakened economy as long as Democrats hold the White House and the Senate, become infuriated when metrics demonstrate that their brinksmanship is failing to damage our national economy enough.

Several times I have accused Republicans of treason for purposely strategizing to further damage an already damaged economy. Ryan's statement yesterday only confirms that I have been on the right track all along.

All of the Kumbayah-ness blabbered about by the Village following the Ryan-Murray budget agreement has been only that....blabbering. Paul Ryan made that clear yesterday. The only question left to answer is how much Republicans can damage our frail recovery during this spring's debt-limit hostage taking season.
