If you have ever wondered how multiple charges of "scandals" against President Obama seemed to come out of nowhere a few months ago...and all at once....David Corn's recent Mother Jones articles on Groundswell will help illuminate the subject.
The extreme-right propaganda group, Groundswell, met on May 8th of this year....
Among those present were former GOP Rep. Allen West, Frank Gaffney of the Center for Security Policy, Jerry Boykin of the Family Research Council, Tom Fitton of Judicial Watch, Stephen Bannon of Breitbart News, and Ginni Thomas. Catherine Engelbrecht, a founder of True the Vote, led the meeting, and the first order of business was a report on the Benghazi controversy from Boykin and Gaffney.
Benghazi is one of the "phony scandals" Obama referred to in his most recent speech on the economy. 4 Americans died in the attack on a CIA outpost in Benghazi, Libya last September 11th....and yet the desire of Republicans to find a conspiracy of Obama/Hillary evil behind the tragic event has gone absolutely nowhere.
But like House Republicans voting 40 times to repeal Obamacare, anti-government elected Republicans don't give up easily. And Groundswell is there to help.
Allen West, Jerry Boykin, Frank Gaffney, Breitbart News and Ginni Thomas (wife of Justice Clarence Thomas) combine to make a veritable Who's Who of.....imaginative thinkers....from today's self-marginalized conservative right. That is not a secret. Google any of those names and find out for yourself just how far out on the far right cliff those folks are.
Media Matters explains just how extreme.....Fox News contributor and former congressman Allen West accused fellow Republicans of engaging in a "cover up" of the attacks on U.S. facilities in Benghazi.
Yes, you read that correctly. West, a Groundswell member and Fox Noise darling, is now accusing Republicans of a cover up of Benghazi. Dutifully, Texas Rep. Steve Stockman, no shrinking violet winger himself, has circulated a discharge petition demanding a House vote on appointing a select congressional committee to investigate Benghazi......the goal of Groundswell members who met to plot against Obama/Hillary on May 8th.
For the record, six House and Senate committees have already conducted hearings into the Benghazi tragedy.....and yet Republicans have come up empty handed on their goal of politically wounding either Obama or Hillary over an event that happened 10 months ago.
Back to the May 8th Groundswell meeting. Boykin and Gaffney reported on meetings they had held the previous night with John Boehner and Darrell Issa. Boykin and Gaffney encouraged Boehner and Issa to set up a special select committee to further investigate Benghazi. Boehner balked explaining that he wanted to let the process play out in House and Senate committees first.
Gaffney is reported to have threatened Boehner by telling the House Speaker that there was a "lot of restiveness among donors" over the Benghazi investigation. Breitbart News representative, Stephen Bannon strategized with other Groundswell members that May evening recommending that Republican Obama/Hillary hunters not "mention the impeachment of Hillary Clinton." Bannon's concern was that a select committee would be more difficult to approve if it appeared that Republicans were witch hunting Hillary.
These extremists have every right to express their political views in America. They also have every right to purposely attempt to deceive the public for purely political ends. Consider the fact that Rupert Murdoch and Roger Ailes deceive the public daily for profit. Even the clownish wife of a sitting Supreme Court Justice has every right to make a total fool of herself scheming and plotting to deceive American voters into believing false narratives.
However, after 10 months of beating the dead horse of Benghazi, Americans have learned that despite the tragedy of four American deaths there last September, there is no there, there. No "stand down" orders, no "Obama was absent", no
"talking points conspiracy"......nothing.
After 6 separate congressional committees failed to produce evidence of the conspiracy theory of evil Groundswell members wanted highlighted for political power reasons....the "dead enders" refuse to put down their dead horse beating clubs.
Outrageously.....Groundswell members have now started blaming Republicans for "covering up" for a scandal that was never there in the first place.
