Gunrunning Nation

1:42 CBS video......Gunrunning Across the Border

Hillary on Mexico's drug gang violence....

"I feel very strongly we have a co-responsibility," Clinton told reporters, adding: "Our insatiable demand for illegal drugs fuels the drug trade. Our inability to prevent weapons from being illegally smuggled across the border to arm these criminals causes the deaths of police officers, soldiers and civilians."

Kidnappings....

(John) McCain noted that the city of Phoenix, Arizona, now has the second-highest kidnapping rate in the world, behind only Mexico City. A recent rise in the number of kidnappings in Phoenix has been tied to the drug cartels.

Joementum....

Lieberman, who chairs the (Homeland Security) committee, called for an additional $250 million to be used for the hiring of 1,600 additional customs and border protection officers. He said that another $50 million should be allocated to immigration and customs agents investigating firearms distribution and violence near the border.

He also called on Congress to close "the gun show loophole ... that allows purchasers to circumvent background checks that occur at gun stores."

Arizona Central.....

Every couple of weeks in Phoenix or Tucson, there is a gun show.

Federal law requires the licensed gun dealers at those shows to make background checks before any sale. On the other hand, unlicensed private citizens at the same shows can sell to whomever they want, no questions asked.

As far back as 2001, McCain said, "Clearly, alleged members of terrorist organizations have been able to secure guns and weapons using the gun-show loophole."

....the NRA just so happens to be holding its 138th annual meeting at the brand new Phoenix Convention Center between May 14 and 17.

The bowtied George Will...

There are more than 6,600 licensed American gun dealers on the 2,000-mile border with Mexico.

Newsweek...

As much as 90 percent of the assault weapons and other guns used by Mexican drug cartels are coming from the United States, fueling drug-related violence that is believed to have killed more than 7,000 people since January 2008,

(Attorney General, Eric) Holder endorsed reinstituting the ban on assault weapons—a position that President Obama himself supported during last year's campaign. A federal ban on high-powered, semi-automatic assault weapons, originally passed by Congress in 1994, expired five years ago.

The National Rifle Association quickly sent out "action alerts" to its members. Sixty-five House Democrats signed a letter saying they would oppose any new ban—as did Montana's two Democratic senators, Max Baucus and Jon Tester. "Senators to Attorney General Holder: Stay Away From Our Guns," read a press release sent out by Baucus's office. In addition, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid both shot down the idea that Congress would take up any new assault weapons ban this year.

The attorney general flies to Mexico City on April 1 to talk about steps the United States can take to deal with cartel violence—and the Mexicans are adamant about reimposing a weapons ban.

Large financial institutions are holding the nation hostage, threatening to blow the nation's economy to smithereens if our political leadership doesn't do what it says.

The NRA and associated pro-gun lobbies in the U.S. are holding our nation hostage, threatening politicians with extinction if they even think about reinstituting the assault weapons ban.

These are the same card carrying NRA members who insist that the 2nd amendment guarantees every adult American citizen the full and equal right to own a military-style assualt weapon.

As many as 2,000 firearms are believed to cross the border into Mexico every day. And they are often assault weapons, (CBS reporter)Tracy reports.

The ATF says that 7,700 guns found in Mexico last year were traced to sellers in the United States.

"All the killing they are doing here are killing with guns that are selling in the United States," said Tijuana Mayor Jorge Ramos. Link

Assault weapons from the U.S. don't kill people.....people using assault weapons from the U.S. kill people.

Seriously now.....when it comes to guns....what in the f*ck is wrong with us?
