In his State of the Union address in January, President Obama made the fund for small-business loans a top priority. The measure was supposed to have an easy road to passage,...
That last line is humorous.
It hasn't been an easy road because of the "crazy"...
“It’s stunning. I mean, it’s like if there ever ought to be a place where there is common ground. Small businesses in my state are dying on the vine,” said Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.). “I’m hopeful, but when people scratch their head and say things are kind of crazy up here [in the Senate] — case in point.”
What would the small business bill being stalled for months by Reublicans do?....
The bill calls for about $12 billion in tax breaks for small businesses. It also includes a $30 billion fund to encourage banks to lend to small business.
Sounds kind of like a bill Republicans would author.
All Senate Republicans, including George Voinovich (R-OH) at the time, voted to block the small business provisions....
The vote to end a Republican filibuster on the latest measure was 58-42. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., joined all Republicans to vote to continue the filibuster, but only as a procedural step that allows him to call up the bill again.
Small business owners vote Republican, leaving president Obama no other alternative than to state the obvious....
It has been praised as being good for small business by groups like the Chamber of Commerce and the National Federation of Independent Businesses.
A majority of senators are in favor of the bill and yet the obstruction continues. It’s obstruction that stands in the way of small business owners getting the loans and the tax cuts that they need to prosper. It’s obstruction that defies common sense.
As always, when Republicans in the Senate are doing stuff that defies common sense.....they make silly stuff up to cover their naked political ambition....
Senate Republicans aren't really objecting to substance. They complained that Democrats weren't letting them offer all the extraneous amendments they wanted, like one to permanently end the estate tax.
Retiring Senator George Voinovich (R-OH) takes it from there...
In an interview, Voinovich said he could no longer support Republican efforts to delay the measure in hopes of winning the right to offer additional amendments. Most of the proposed GOP amendments "didn't have anything to do with the bill" anyway, Voinovich said, and amounted merely to partisan "messaging."
"We don't have time for messaging," Voinovich said. "We don't have time anymore. This country is really hurting."
Voinovich said he told Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) that, if a single amendment to reduce paperwork for business owners is considered on the floor, he would add his vote to that of the 59 senators who caucus with Democrats.
Oh my.....threatening the other GOP Senators.
I don't want to give Voinovich too much credit here.....maybe a little.....because he has voted to stall this very same bill for most of the year. Better late than never, I suppose.
Take note of the obvious truth spoken by Voinovich. The GOP's fig leaf amendments complaint is simply blown to pieces by Voinovich's candid "didn't have anything to do with the bill."
What did that fig leaf have to do with, then?
Again, the former Ohio governor blows flimsy fig leaves masquerading as honest justifications for GOP obstructionism.....to bits....
The GOP stalling, Voinovich said, was all about partisan "messaging."
The same "messaging" we've all been witnessing from Republicans for 20 months in a row.
The....umm....message behind the GOP "messaging" which Voinovich denounced?
Obama and the Democrats are socialist "others" who are not like "real Americans." The intent of these "others" is to dismantle the "real America" by taking American rich peoples' money and spending it on giving free stuff to mostly minority Americans.
That's the "message" from Republicans over the last 20 months.
Good on Voinovich for calling bullsh*t on GOP obstructionistic messaging.
