In 2008, I encouraged readers to vote for Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primaries. I have never regretted doing so. While it is true that Obama has disappointed in several key areas of policy, or lack thereof.....I still believe Obama is as close to a progressive president as we're likely to get in our declining oligarchy. Hillary Clinton, as we shall see, is a neo-conservative's neo-conservative
All the Very Serious have simply written off Obama's final two presidential years....and are now a-hankering for Hillary. Hillary is part of the Very Serious crowd, and if she runs for president, she will likely win.
That said, the talking heads who despise Obama will be all over Hillary's latest interview in The Atlantic by Jeffrey Goldberg.....
(Hillary) suggested that she finds (Obama's) approach to foreign policy overly cautious, and she made the case that America needs a leader who believes that the country, despite its various missteps, is an indispensable force for good.
To nip any misunderstandings over Hillary Clinton in the bud, I recommend reading Goldberg's article. As I read it yesterday, I was struck by the thought that her answers to foreign policy questions could just as well have come out of the mouths of Dick Cheney or Sean Hannity.
Clinton describes Obama's resistance to involve the U.S. militarily in the Syrian civil war as a "failure." Which means, of course, that had she been president these last few years, America would be in an active war in Syria right now.
Hillary explains that Obama failed in Syria by not being able to rally the right, moderate rebels in the war torn country....
“The failure to help build up a credible fighting force of the people who were the originators of the protests against Assad—there were Islamists, there were secularists, there was everything in the middle—the failure to do that left a big vacuum, which the jihadists have now filled,” Clinton said.
That is the thinking which led the U.S. to arm the mujahadeen in Afghanistan in the 80's. Members of the mujahadeen later went on to perpetrate 9-11.
If Hillary actually believes that American leaders can decipher which groups of "rebels" in the middle east are potential moderate partners who the U.S. can work with....then she has deluded herself.
The following is indistinguishable from any given day's Hannity monologue.....
“You know, when you’re down on yourself, and when you are hunkering down and pulling back, you’re not going to make any better decisions than when you were aggressively, belligerently putting yourself forward,” she said. “One issue is that we don’t even tell our own story very well these days.”
You see.....because Obama doesn't see any military solution in several war-torn middle eastern countries.....Obama is "hunkering down." And pray tell, what in the hell kind of "story" is there to tell other nations about the United States? That we will torture people? That we will unilaterally invade countries even if those countries pose no imminent threat to us? That middle eastern nations should emulate our style of oligarchial democracy? That our offshore gulag-prison is a beacon of freedom?
But the truly terrible portion of Hillary's interview comes when the topic of Israel was brought up.
“I think Israel did what it had to do to respond to the rockets,” she told me. “Israel has a right to defend itself. The steps Hamas has taken to embed rockets and command-and-control facilities and tunnel entrances in civilian areas, this makes a response by Israel difficult.”
....“it’s impossible to know what happens in the fog of war. Some reports say, maybe it wasn’t the exact UN school that was bombed, but it was the annex to the school next door where they were firing the rockets. And I do think oftentimes that the anguish you are privy to because of the coverage, and the women and the children and all the rest of that, makes it very difficult to sort through to get to the truth.”
She continued, “There’s no doubt in my mind that Hamas initiated this conflict. … So the ultimate responsibility has to rest on Hamas and the decisions it made.”
Bebe couldn't it have stated it any better,...or worse.
That specific Hillary answer is reprehensible to anyone who has followed the latest genocidal outbreak in Gaza from the beginning. Attributing the slaughter of hundreds of Palestinian children to some "fog of war" bullshite may sound reassuring to Zionists and many American evangelicals....but it's bullshite, all the same.
Now, this week the Village will conveniently use Hillary's interview to bash, bash, bash Obama....because that's what the Village does. Perhaps you've noticed. However, the more important point to be taken away from her interview is that Hillary has officially, and proudly, presented to U.S. voters her neo-conservative credentials.
And that means, should she become president in 2 years, that domestic needs will have to take a back seat to ever-expanding permanent war.....just as the America-destroying conservative movement would have it.
