Sometimes a quick review is helpful.
On the same day that Barack Obama was inaugurated in January, 2009, Republican operatives met to plan how to obstruct the new president's..... presidency.
For several hours in the Caucus Room (a high-end D.C. establishment), ..... they plotted out ways to not just win back political power, but to also put the brakes on Obama's legislative platform.
Elected Republicans in 2009 had no intention whatsoever of working with Obama for the greater good of the American people.
It would be balls-to-the-wall GOP obstructionism from that point forward, the GOP setting an all-time record for number of filibusters in the Senate during that Congress.
After uninformed, wildly self-radicalized Tea Party members took over the House in the 2010 midterms, GOP hostage taking broke out all over.
In December, 2010, on the eve of the expiration of the Bush-era tax cuts.....the GOP staged a political hostage crisis. Unless ALL income levels were included in an extension of those tax cuts.....Republicans promised to block any agreement, which guaranteed everyone's taxes would go up. The GOP put the interests of 98% of U.S. citizens aside for the sake of the top 2%....the only demographic they represent in Congress.
Thankfully, Obama was able to gain approval of the START Treaty, the repeal of DADT and a couple of other positive steps out of the hostage taking negotiations with Republican hostage takers.
Then in May-June, 2011....another hostage taking crisis. This time it was the occasion of the 2011 budget. The same Republicans threatened to close the entire government down unless Obama gave the mighty deficit scolds more cuts in the 2011 budget. Obama outfoxed John Boehner during that standoff and another crisis was averted.
Then came THE GOP caper of Obama's first term. The credit extension crisis of August, 2011. That was the standoff that resulted in S&P lowering the U.S. bond rating. Pushed by self-radicalized Tea Party members, the GOP came within an eyelash of collapsing the U.S. and world economy during that August hostage standoff. The same political party responsible for doubling debt during W.....and without flinching....threatened to default on U.S. creditors if government expenditures were not radically slashed.
Tea Party members sang "cut it or shut it" during the tense hostage standoff.
Out of that hostage crisis came the failed "debt commission" which resulted in the still-threatening "sequestration"...$500 billion in cuts to domestic spending, $500 billion in cuts to defense spending.
The GOP agreed to the sequestration last year....but have since promised to back away from any and all defense spending cuts.
Less than two months before the re-election of President Obama, Republicans are once-again telegraphing their intentions to stage more hostage taking situations in the future. In fact, Republicans are using the fact that they are a hostage taking political party to try to convince voters to go ahead and vote for their candidates.
“If Obama wins re-election, the Republican Party will react by moving right, not left,” observes Ramesh Ponnuru, a well-connected conservative writer, in a Bloomberg op-ed Monday. “It will become less likely to compromise with Obama, not more.”
"Less likely...not more."
An already extremely radical group of GOP hostage takers and proven record-breaking obstructionists are now threatening to take new and improved hostages before the election even happens.
What the repulsive Ponnuru is telling the American people is that you might as well go ahead and vote for Mitt Romney, because if you re-elect Barack Obama....our thuggishness, our obstructionism, our threats, our hostage taking during a second Obama term will be even worse.
Paraphrasing....'You think we're crazy now.....just wait.'
Boxturtle look-a-like Mitch McConnell says basically the same thing when asked if Republicans would work with a second term Obama....
"I think it depends on whether Obama has an epiphany," McConnell said in an interview.
Translation: If Obama only works to pass far-right Republican policies and initiatives....then, naturally, Boxturtle and his gang of hostage takers will "work" with the re-elected Kenyan-socialist. If not....well, Republicans can't promise anything but obstructionism.
That in itself is a hostage taking threat. Republicans are actually pre-threatening.....before a general election.....to obstruct everything that moves during an Obama second term. Unless U.S. voters vote for Mitt Romney....Republicans promise to make gridlock the only game in Washington. All hostage-taking, all the time.
While Americans still await actions to help them recover from the worst financial catastrophe in modern history....Republicans are promising to bring all potential federal help to a grinding halt if Obama is re-elected.
That is not a "loyal opposition" party.....that is a political party which has self-radicalized itself into an enemy of the people.
