When the Tea Party first crossed my blog screen back in 2009, less than four months after the historic election of our nation's first black president, I suggested that the one defining characteristic of the oddly dressed protest group was "incoherence." The newly elected Barack Obama had been president for all of six weeks, and already, listening to Teas, he had destroyed the nation. That seemed....odd...to me.
The Taxed Enough Already signs proliferated at Tea gatherings...and yet, at the time, federal tax rates were at their lowest level in some 60 years. When asked what it was that they were protesting.....the answer usually came back with a variation of the same theme....Teas were taking their country back.
None of that made any logical sense to me. It was, indeed, a protest movement of incoherence. No matter, because the one raw emotion on display at these Tea events was....anger. Teas were mad as hell and they were not going to take "it" anymore....even though not one Tea spokesperson could define what the "it" was.
Fast forward to this past weekend. The dwindling and increasingly unpopular, yet still incoherent, protest movement staged a huge Million Vet March on Washington.
The rally, called the Million Vet March, kicked off at about 9 a.m. at the east entrance of the World War II Memorial before continuing on to the Lincoln Memorial and splitting off for Lafayette Square.......
The Million Vet March was to be be a huge protest against the closure of war memorials. Closures which Tea celebrities, Cruz, Lee and Palin, and supposedly a Million Vets, would blame on the personal, arbitrary and extremely mean, decision of Barack Obama. The yarn spun would be that Obama hated the country and its veterans and was punishing both by shuttering war memorials, an obvious presidential kicking of wheelchair bound vets.
How would D.C. handle such a huge, veteran-filled protest? A million veterans plus families and like-minded Tea supporters would make the giant protest the largest ever. Would the Million Vet March be a game changer forcing the mean Obama to back down from hating on America's veterans?
By midday, about 200 people gathered in Lafayette Park across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House although it wasn’t clear how many of them were tourists and how many were protesters. Some among the crowd held American flags and others held yellow “Don’t Tread on Me” flags and signs that said “Impeach Obama” and “Respect our vets.”
The lawmakers (Cruz and Lee) and the former (1/2 term) governor – and 2008 GOP vice-presidential nominee (Palin) – joined a crowd that removed barricades at the memorial and chanted “tear down these walls,” according to Washington, D.C., radio station WTOP.
Naturally, when patriotic veterans stage a Million Vet March where 200 people actually show up......someone always brings a large Confederate flag to wave in defiance. Here's Republican David Frum opining.....
If you want to express your love of US Army & its monuments … leave the Confederate flag at home.
Feelin' the incoherence yet? Permit me to enhance that unique feeling of WTF?
The Tea celebrities who led the 200 Veteran March protest against the closing of war memorials were the very people responsible for closing those memorials down. The only voter constituency in favor of shutting down non-essential government services rather than passing a continuing budget resolution....is the Tea Party. And yet, if your head doesn't spin off reading this.....it is the Tea Party who staged the 200 Veteran March in protest of what they had accomplished in shutting down non-essential government services.
Mad Magazine comes to mind.....minus the humor.
But wait...there's more....there's always more....
“I call upon all of you to wage a second American nonviolent revolution, to use civil disobedience, and to demand that this president leave town, to get up, to put the Quran down, to get up off his knees, and to figuratively come out with his hands up,” said Larry Klayman of Freedom Watch, a conservative political advocacy group.
The one response I always received from Tea types in the salad days of incoherence was that any grievances they had with the suspicious character occupying the White House had nothing to do with the.....suspicious character in the White House. It was all about protesting the policies of that suspicious guy occupying the White House.
Do you see any policy distinctions in Larry Klayman's statement? Odd.... I don't either.
So, I'll need your help in answering today's question.....
What message does a Confederate flag, a 'don't tread on me' flag, "Impeach Obama" signs, shouts of "tear down these walls", and calls for Obama to put down his Koran and come out with his hands up......communicate?
